Surf Movie Sunday

Another small batch to pick from this week. The end of summer in the northern hemisphere means a drop in the number of quality clips.

Gilmore wins

Steph Gilmore got a little bit of revenge for losing the world title by beating Carissa Moore in the final of the Roxy Pro. This is Gilmore's best result this year.

New World Champ

Carrissa Moore has just won the womens world championship in France after outgoing champ Steph Gilmore has just beaten the only other women with a shot, Australia's Sally Fitzgibbon in the semis.

The Roxy Pro should finish today as there is only the final between Moore and Gilmore to go. The womens longboarders are in the water now.

Moore is one of the new breed of surfers and rips pretty hard. She is at home in big waves and punting in little ones. She was one of the first star surfers to get mainstream sponsorship, signing with Target and Nike 6.0. Her win will help push Nike deeper into the action sports market. 

Leave a message

Nike have released a surf movie "Leave a Message" for free download in both normal and high definition. The movie stars Nike's sponsored female surfers including Coco Ho, Carissa Moore and Laura Enever. Each of the six girls gets her own one song segment and there is some good surfing by most of them.

A few years ago most blokes surf movies would contain some of the better sequences so it is great to see womens surfing reach a point where it is worth watching. You can be really picky and find some obvious style faults in a couple of the surfers but at the end of the day most of you will never surf anywhere as good as they do.

Rio girls

The waves obviously aren't good enough for the blokes so they have thrown the first two rounds of the women in the water. That must start to piss you off after a while.

Both West Aussies, Clair Bevo and Felicity Parmenter, have been eliminated already. The heat I watched was pretty slow for waves with most rolling through green rather than breaking. Coco Ho has combo-Ed Maya G, who's style clearly is suited to massive Jaws not pissy, fat beach breaks.

Webcast etc available from Billabong, which means that unlike the past locally sponsored events the webcast is decent quality and with decent commentators. It's on during the day/arvo in France but night time in Bunno.

Roxy Pro

Finally some waves for Snapper as well. Not good enough for the blokes so the Roxy Pro and King of the Groms were sent out instead. Round two and the non elimination round three were run for the girls.

Nothing dramatic happened. WA's Clare Bevo, who made it into the event when someone pulled out, lost in round two as did Alana Blanchard, who is back on tour after failing to qualify last year.

The waves were ok but a bit slow and hard really open up on. The backwash on takeoff was killer and a few got smashed !!!!

Quikie and Roxy Pros start today

Round 1 of both the Quiksilver and Roxy Pros have run today in mixed conditions at Snapper Rocks.

Taj and Slater are through to round three in the non-elimination round. Taj hasn't lost a heat at Snapper for a while having won the last three events held there. Hopefully he will make it four.

Steph's fourth

Stephanie Gilmore has just won her fourth world title by making the semis (just).

The waves are onshore but contestable. The women should finish today with the men possibly starting later.

Silvana Lima has won the world tour event in Peru. Who knows what it was like as there was no coverage other than an ASP press release.

With her 5th place WA's Clare Bevo moves up a couple of places to 13th.

The womens tour goes into a break until October. Hopefully it will get better treatment when it returns for the Rip Curl Pro in Portugal.

The Womens World Tour is battling away in Peru. Very hard to tell what is happening as there is no website or webcast.

Steph Gilmore is through to the semis, as is WA's Clair Bevo. Regardless of what happens it will be Clair's best result of the year so far.

The womens event at Bells continues in difficult onshore conditions.

Steph Gilmore is through to another final and her opponent will be Chelsea Hedges or Sophia Mulanovich, who are in the water right now.

The webcast is on and Fuel TV will be broadcasting after the current semi.

Round twos are done

Round two of both the Quiksilver and Roxy Pros were run today in ok surf. No real surprises with highest rated surfers generally winning, except Ben Dunn beaten by WQS champ Dan Ross and Roy Powers who had AI. Andy was throwing buckets on each turn and found the only clean tube of the day. Despite being hugely overscored on his second wave Powers wasn't close. Expect to see this line again over the season - Travis Logie got a 33rd.

In the womens WA Clair Bevo was knocked out and the two former world champs (Hedges and Mulanovich) cruised through.

Heats to watch in round three -

• Taj vs Owen Wright - the aerial master vs the apprentice. If the waves are good will be a killer. Taj said in his round two interview that he has given up all that stretching and training and is just going to free surf in his heats.
• Bobby Martinez v Andy Irons - goofy v natural. Bobby is one of the few backsiders that can go vertical enough at Snapper to challenge and AI is looking red hot already
• Mick, Joel, Dane and Kelly's heats just because they are in them. They should all win.
• Steph Gilmore v Tyler Wright - a world champ whose style is perfect for Snapper vs Owen's radical little sister
• Sophia vs Carissa - the "old" guard vs the new school. Carissa will be one to watch all year.

Gidget Pro will finsh soon

The Womens WCT Gidget Pro at Sunset Beach will finish in a heat and a half. The waves are ok but a little inconsistent.

Aussie Sally Fitzgibbons is ripping hard and just scored the first 10 for a series big turns. She has been on fire in all her heats today. Alana Blanchard is backing up her win in the first of the Triple Crown events with some strong surfing.

Steph Gilmore could be less than six minutes from being World Champ. If Coco Ho, who needs a combo 12+, doesn't progress out of the current semi Steph wins with one event left.

Alana Blanchard wins first event

Unlike sports cover girl Anna Kornakova, surfing pin up Hawaiian Alana Blanchard can win ! The Womens Van Pro was done and dusted in a single day thanks to the four and five surfer heat format.

Blanchard just beat Steph Gilmore, with 1.12 points between then. The waves were similar to yesterday and the girls surfed fast and hard with a bit of power behind them.

Hawaiian contest finally back on

AThe first contest of the Triple Crown has finally re-started after a three lay days for no swell. Today was in the couple of feet range and with a strong sideshore wind. The brown water made it look a bit like winter in Bunbury, just with some walls and power.

The event is still in the round of 96, with the WCT surfers coming in during the next round. Parko is entered to try and defend his Triple Crown title from last year. He has a difficult heat up against Pancho Sullivan and Tanner Gudaskis, who needs a good result to make next years WCT. Mick Fanning has pulled out to concentrate on Pipe.

The Irons brothers are through as is Sunny Garcia who won his heat with the highest combined total of the round.

Everyone will be hoping for some swell, especially the women whose WCT event is on hold pending good surf.

Sofia wins home event

Sofia Mulanovich has won the Womens WCT event in Peru beating Stephanie Gilmore. The waves were ok, longish racy lefts.

Sofia moves to third on the ratings and Steph puts a few more points between her and Silvana Lima, who was beaten in the Quarters.

The next event is at Sunset Beach starting on 24th.

Women in Peru

The womens WCT is in Peru and after a few on and off days they have made it through to the quarters. Both title contenders are through, as is last contest winner Coco Ho. Home town hero Sofia Mulanovich is up against another former world champ Chelsea Hedges.

The waves look fun, nothing to testing but contestable at about three feet.

Coco Ho wins the Search

A few days ago Coco Ho beat former World Champ Chelsea Hedges to win the Search. The waves were small but very contestable. In fact they were probably better than anything the blokes got.

The two women currently fighting out the World Title race Steph Gilmore and Silvana Lima finished 9th and 3rd respectively. Steph just holds the top spot with three events (Peru and two in Hawaii) to go.

More contest news

The Womens Search is on at one of the backup venues. The waves look really nice - clean, offshore and around chest height. They are in to round three with Steph Gilmore through. Her current competition for the world title, Silvana Lima just beating Aussie Jessie Miley-Dyer by less than 0.3 with a wave in the final minute.

Over in the Maldives Harley Ingelby has scored his first World Championship in the WLT with a second. Hawaiian Kai Sallas won.

Lima Wins

So we can expect a tattoo of her trophy on her other side !

Gilmore still has the number 1 spot with a first and two seconds but Lima has narrowed the points gap to just over 300. Sophia Millanovic has also stayed in the race with her third taking her over 2000 points.
