The event that seems to have gone on forever has to finish tonight. Yesterday they ran three rounds in waves that look good in the video but were disgusting. If they weren't made to surf them I doubt anyone would have bothered. Still they were better than the onshore storm slop of the day before that round 3 was forced into.
As usual Rio and more widely Brazil has been a massive flop. The women had there whole contest run in 2 foot closeouts where two moves got you a 7 and three 9 but at least it was offshore. The men have had size but thats about it.
Taj and Yadin are out. Taj scored two 9 in non-elimination round 4 but got stung with an interference. This meant Slater in round 5 and the exit door. He now has a few knuckle marks in his Mayhem (watch the video)
The video shows just how great some of these surfers are and how good some of the lower ranked surfers are in crap when they can do airs on and aren't expected to do proper turns. Watch for the Superman, Slater and Jordy.

John Florence has just beat Parko in the final by going to the air.
John John is the full package and has been a standout all contest. He can find a tube anywhere and throws massive airs.
With Slater a no show and everyone above him falling earlier Parko has gone to the top of the ratings.
The waves weren't good no matter how the sponsors talk it up. Billabong had pulled out of the WCT at J-Bay but could find the money for Rio. This event should have been down graded to a six star and J-Bay left alone. The ASP suffers from being controlled by the big surf companies and this is an example of putting sales before the sport.

Yadin out
Yadin Nichol has been beaten by C J Hopgood in Rio. Yadin had a four and one plus. CJ had nothing until he pulled into the only real tube of the heat and got an eight. Parko was calling the heat and pointed out than today an eight is worth twelve.
Everyone is hoping they can it at the end of this round.

Men on in Rio crap
Shitty waves for the Billabong Pro again today. There is a bit of size (5 foot pro size) but is is messy, wobbly, rip filled close outs. The first couple of heats had the odd decent little tube but with the dropping tide they have disappeared.
The last three heats were all won with less than a 10 point two wave total. They have been close but thats because no one can get more than a four. They are talking about running round three because there is swell. Hopefully they will wait to see if the waves clean up and become more contestable.
FuelTV has the broadcast and their is a webcast as well.

Girls done
Sally Fitzgibbons has won the women's Billabong Pro Rio in more crappy beach break dribble. She beat Coco Ho in a close final. Both surfers got decent scores on waves that normally would be scored a four but got beefed up with the conditions.
This is her second win of the year and she is again a serious contender for the title again this year with just two more events left (France and the US Open).
Hopefully the men will get better waves but don't bet on it. Round two surfers would be getting a little nervous.

Rio on
The Billabong Pro Rio has started with Men's round one heats in some decent beach breaks. The waves look tricky and are breaking out of a weird sidewash take off from a rocky headland.
Taj has just won his round one heat ins board he basically has never ridden.
Big news is that Slater pulled out a few days ago with a leg injury. That gives some else a chance to be number one after the event.
The webcam and results are down at the moment but it's live on FuelTV.
Brazil isn't good for us time wise and usually the surf is pretty crap. If the heats start early enough you can get through a few before bed but the bulk will be for night owls only.

The rip off in Rio
The ASP has been in damage mode after the feedback on the judging of Adriano DeSouza's semi against Owen Wright and to a lesser extent the final against Taj.
In the semi Adriano did a big floater and got an eight. His other scoring wave consisted of two standard back hand reos. After a couple of standard turns Owen landed big airs on both his waves, scoring sixes. The judges have released a statement saying in part that Adriano's wave were bigger and his floater was more committed than Owen's air because anyone pro can do an air.
My two cents worth - any pro (and most decent amateurs) can pull off a floater. This one was big but it wasn't anything special and the reason he did the floater is because his wave choice put him on a close out. Floaters have generally been either a linking move, to get around a section or something to finish with in the shoredump. If they are the only move on a wave they generally don't score well because it reflects bad wave selection.
Owen selected waves that gave him room to work and surfed them as well as they could be surfed. Yes they were smaller but wave size is not part of the criteria and the smaller ones weren't closing out. He did a series of moves that were committed, different from each other and used the full potential of the wave. If you ignore what Adriano got for his rides you would say they were awarded scores that were pretty close to what they deserve. Compare them to Adriano and they were high eights.
The waves for the final were pretty bad. Taj's waves were pretty fairly scored but again Adriano best scoring wave was overscored by probably two points. He blew his second move, which was a pretty standard backhand reo and did three identical moves. Personally he should lose points for claiming every wave he catches but that's not in the criteria.
The ASP have made it worse by releasing the judges statement. It just looks like they are making piss weak excuses for why they screwed up. Since the change in the judging criteria it has been almost impossible to work out what needs to be done to get a decent score. I don't like judges deciding that they will score tubes higher at his place, on this bank or tide but vertical moves in this round. Judge how the surfer surfs. If he get a wave a Chopes that suits him doing an eight foot air reverse rather than a tube give him the score it deserves. If he rips the bag out of a smaller wave because it is cleaner and holds up, don't reward his competitor who flukes an out of control move on a close out because its bigger. The ASP are starting to lose more credibility and eyes on their events with the inconsistent judging.

Rio girls
The waves obviously aren't good enough for the blokes so they have thrown the first two rounds of the women in the water. That must start to piss you off after a while.
Both West Aussies, Clair Bevo and Felicity Parmenter, have been eliminated already. The heat I watched was pretty slow for waves with most rolling through green rather than breaking. Coco Ho has combo-Ed Maya G, who's style clearly is suited to massive Jaws not pissy, fat beach breaks.
Webcast etc available from Billabong, which means that unlike the past locally sponsored events the webcast is decent quality and with decent commentators. It's on during the day/arvo in France but night time in Bunno.

Slater is King of the World again
Although it seems that he is always number one Kelly Slater has moved to the top of the World Title Race after his second place in Brazil. The event was won by the youngest surfer in the contest, rookie and local boy Jadson Andre by less than half a point. It was his first win and now sees him into equal fourth with Mick Fanning.
Taj's 17th has dropped him to third 250 points behind Jordy Smith. However it is really early in the year. Hopefully the 17th will be one of TB's dropped scores. J-Bay and Teuphoo are coming up, both events he does well at, especially J-Bay.

Big names crash
Brazil hasn't been kind to the big names on the tour, except one Slater. Taj went in round three, Mick and Parko in four.
Slater has won his round four heat and is into the quarters. Only one Aussie has made it to the final rounds. Owen Wright is having his best event of his time as a full time CT surfer. Four Yanks have made it through including CJ, Taylor Knox and Dane Reynolds. Jordy Smith
The event will finish today and Taj is likely to drop down the ratings after his 17th. The waves are mainly lefts and seem to favour the goofy footers. But both Kelly and Jordy didn't seem to mind smashing backside.

Taj was ripped off
TB has just lost to Travis Logie in Brazil by less than a point. This hands him a 17th and puts a little dent in his world title run.
Taj was clearly underscored on both his scoring waves and Travis was massively overscored for his mistakes. The big difference between class and WQS re-qualifiers is they don't need to mess their surfing with double pump bottom turns or mis-timmed re-entries. Logie's highest scoring wave (a 7+) had both and he failed to show style, commitment, flow or power as required by the judging criteria.
Big Luke Egan did not hold back in his commentary and was quite clear from when scores dropped for their first waves that Taj was being hard done by.
Didn't Cheyne Horan get underscored whenever he challenged MR for a title ? Who's in the number two spot ? Slater going for 10 !!!!

One down, one still going
Steph Gilmore proved once again that no one on the WCT can beat her winning the Beachly Classic at Dee Why Point. That is win three from four events with her only loss (not counting stupid round one) was against a wildcard. The next womens event is in Peru in June.
After a couple of lay days the Billabong Pro Brazil is back on in ok surf. Brazil continues to be the one place that is always crappy and below the "Dream Tour" standard. Round three and possibly round four may go today.
Taj pulls the lowest qualifier Travis Logie, who surprised everyone by actually winning a man on man heat at WCT level. Don't want to jinx TB but he should win over the worst surfer on tour. There are a few names in the strange position of being in round three. Parko has a potentially difficult heat as do anyone against a Brazil nut. Bede vs Owen Wright and Freddie P vs Flores could be good as well.

After a couple of lay days the Billabong Pro Brazil is back on in ok surf. Brazil continues to be the one place that is always crappy and below the "Dream Tour" standard. Round three and possibly round four may go today.
Taj pulls the lowest qualifier Travis Logie, who surprised everyone by actually winning a man on man heat at WCT level. Don't want to jinx TB but he should win over the worst surfer on tour. There are a few names in the strange position of being in round three. Parko has a potentially difficult heat as do anyone against a Brazil nut. Bede vs Owen Wright and Freddie P vs Flores could be good as well.

Round two and three
Brazil started late last night with the non-elimination round one. Not that it matters but other than Parko the top surfers lost. The Hopgoods both got through to round three in waves that suit their styles. Travis Logie lost again.
Round two is on now. The waves are ok, decent size but a bit all over the place. It looks like there will be some slow heats wave count wise. It is cold, grey and pouring with rain - no bikini babes at this time of the year.
Taj has just won his round two heat with a huge air and a combo score over a Brazilian wildcard. Even if Taj has lost both his top scores he still would have won easily with his two back ups. Mick is in the water now against a local and Slater is up next against another one.
The webcast is basic but Billabong seems to have sent their commentators. Luke Egan, Snips Parsons and GT are a huge step up over the people used at last year's event.

Contest frenzy
The fourth womens CT event starts tomorrow. The Beachley Classic is usually held in crap suburban beach break waves but is the second stand alone event in the last two weeks. Carissa Moore won last week in New Zealand in ok but small surf after Steph Gilmore was knocked out by a wildcard early in the event. Its hard to get excited about these events because the waves really make it hard to show any decent surfing.

The men are in Brazil on Friday for the first Billabong event. Billabong have taken over after the local sponsor pulled out at the last moment. This event was moved to winter to try and get some decent waves. Last year it was crap and this year will probably be the same. And it will probably look cold and un-Brazil like on the beach as well. This was the worst webcast last year and it looks like it will be again as Billabong hasn't had the time get its team there.
On the plus side with the change in judging this year the event should be even more tailor made for Taj, Slater, Jordy and Dane.

Is Slater Back ?
Kelly Slater has won his first WCT event of the year and ended his worst start to a season ever. With six events including the Slater hunting grounds of J-Bay, Trestles and Pipe, maybe getting his tenth this year is not out of the question.
Last night he rode his fourth board for the contest, a fairly standard 5'9" squash tail Merrick and he just seems to be able to pull that one manoeuvre that makes you shake your head.
The other finalist was Brazilian Adrian De Souza, who was in his second final of the year (losing to Parko at the Quikie Pro at Snapper Rocks), is having his best year yet. His surfing was worthy of his place in the final.
The waves were ok but most scoring rides were a fairly similar mix of vertical re-entries and the odd floater. This resulted in most heats being fairly close. Interestingly despite the waves being mostly lefts on one goofy footer (CJ) made it through to the quarter finals. This may have been because the waves tended to make backhand snaps look better than forehand re-entries.
The change of date seems to have worked and the event fits better in the middle rather than towards the end of the title race. Nothing has been worse than a World Champ decided because his competitors couldn't find any waves in two foot onshore closeouts. Only the photographers would have been disappointed as they wouldn't have been able to fill their quota of Brazilian G-string bikinis.
Slater has jumped into the top 10 for the first time this year. Parko remains at one but De Souza has moved to second with Fanning and Taj falling down a few spots. CJ and Parko are the only members of the top ten to not have a 17th as a throw away. Unlike last year everyone has managed to get through at least one heat.

Contest On
Despite a forced re-start when no waves came though at the start of heat one the waves are starting to flow through in Brazil.
The surfing has already been two steps higher than last round. Bede has cranked out two massive waves to have two 8+ rides whilst Damo Hobgood has a 7 and 6 but still needs more than 9.
Good way to spend a quiet Friday night.

Round 3 Done
Another full day of action in reasonably good waves. Most of the early heats were a bit slow but the surfing was good.
Most top seeds got through. Jermey Flores beat another Frenchman with a 7 plus in the last 30 seconds and Jordy was beaten in a slowish heat. He was one of the few that went right but they were fat and he missed out. Slater rode a swallow tail epoxy and has now ridden something different each heat.
Last night's commentator indicated that with the dropping swell and a poor forecast the rest of the contest might be run tonight. All round 4 match ups look good, hopefully the waves will hang around.

Round 3 on
Round three has just started with Aussie Bede Durbridge through in the first heat.
The webcast is a bit patchy at the moment so it is a bit hard to tell the conditions. Looks like a 7 is a really good score.
The better heats are late tonight. Parko should beat Neco Padaraz, whilst the waves should suit Taj but also his competitor Nathaniel Curran. Slater takes on Ben Dunn which may be harder than it looks.

Another Day Off
No contest in Brazil today.
Looking at the early morning (their time) webcast it looks like a good decision with howling side/offshore winds messing it up. With half the comp. done in the first two days there is still plenty of time to wait for decent waves.
