Regional WA gets ripped off on their sports coverage again. The ASP is celebrating a deal with the 10 digital sports channel One to broadcast some of the 2011 World Tour, starting with the Quikie Pro later this month.

That means no TV coverage for us in the country and another sport we don't get to see. Ok it was only available to those with Foxtel but I do !!!!!!!!

The webcast will still be running so we'll have to make do with that.

Currently there are two star events, one at Burleigh and a prime in Brazil. I watched a little bit of the Burleigh event this morning. The waves were pretty crappy, small, fat and onshore and the name surfers don't start appearing for a few rounds yet. If there are wave the weekend will be good with surfers of the calibre of Taj, Occy, Fanning and Parko all in the mix.

Parko is back

After getting a 10 on his first competition wave since his massive fin chop, Parko has blazed through the first contest of the Hawaiian season, the Reef Pro winning easily a few minutes ago.

The waves have been big, small, offshore and crumbly over the contest period. Steph Gilmore won the womens event a few days ago with WA's Felicity Parmenteer doing really well to reach the final rounds.

The legends heat was one of the best. Surfed on the best day in the biggest waves, Tom Curren won from Occy, Sunny Garcia and Tom Carroll. They will be surfing at each event. Can't wait for Pipe !

AI wins Tahiti

Andy Irons won the Billabong Pro as most of us would have been eating breakfast. On the last day of the waiting period there were some nice wave, if a little windy and small. However there were plenty of little barrels and Kelly Slater got yet another 10 in his quarter final and the wave deserved every point with him taking off late under the lip, freefalling, almost losing balance and then slotting deep and long. He even looked back after coming out clean.




Andy was a deserved winner after surfing well all event and getting through some close heats after losing in round one. I've never rated AI. His stance is ugly and his feet are to far apart, he claims to often and was consistently over scored during his world champ years. He has then had the advantage of a guaranteed wildcard after his contest hiatus, something that wasn't extended to Tom Curren, Occy or Slater. However he has been working very hard with Parko and his trainer to get back in the game and his wife is pregnant. In what looked like an honest pre-event interview and in his interview with GT in the channel after the final, Andy showed a new maturity and self-awareness that wasn't there in the past. In the past he has been huge in the Europe and Hawaiian legs so at number 7 he is still in the title hunt. However he is already carrying his throw away events and can't afford any slip ups.

Slater has jumped up to second while Taj stays at third and Jordy at one.The tour has been trimmed in size with the two "injury wildcards" announced today. Kierran Perrow and Gabe Kling will stay on tour due to their early season injuries. We can also expect to continue to see Tom Whitaker and Dean Morrison for most of the rest of the season as a replacement for Parko, who isn't expected back before Hawaii and Kai Otten who has a serious spine injury.

The next event is in the US at Trestles. Not long to wait as it starts on the 12th.

Margaret River Pro

Call it whatever you want, it will always be the Masters. The Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, a 6 star WQS event, starts Monday after the trials this weekend.


Jake Patterson has fallen from his lofty WCT position in retirement. Not only does he have to enter his "home" event via the trials (which he won from WAs Dave Delroy-Carr) but they spelt his name wrong on the results page of their website.

With the upcoming move to a single ranking system and a short break between Snapper and Bells, this years Pro has some decent heats right from the first round. Just about every heat contains a former WCT surfer and round 1 (the round of 128) has two former world champs (Occy and Sunny). Sunny is up against Bra Boy and big wave charge Mark Mathew, which should make a good heat if there is some swell (the Naturaliste Buoy is over two metres and heading straight up).

This year's Pro is a bit of a family event. The Macauley family have only two entrants, Bronte and Laura, after Dad Dave got knocked out in the first round of the trials. The Gudazkus brothers are here as are brother and sister combos Owen and Tyler Wright (Owen won the Boost Surfsho comp today) and Mason and Coco Ho from Hawaii.

Others of interest in round 1 include Frenchman Patrick Bevan who threw a pile of spanners in the championship works last year in Europe as a wildcard., John John Florence who isn't little anymore and Nat Young, the American grommett not the former world champ.

The WCT surfers are seeded into round two (round of 96). Taj is in the first heat and on a red hot roll. Yadin Nichol takes on Dan Ross in heat four. WA's Ry Craike is in heat 10 with world champ Mick Fanning up against Josh Carr and German Marlon Lipke. Joel is in the last heat of the round against Chris Ward and Dayan Neve. Kai Otten will be one to look out for. The waves suit his style and he surfed well at Snapper. He is against 2008 WQS champ Nathaniel Curran, who must be disappointed with his WCT performance last year.

There's a few big names in the Women. Courtney Conlouge from the US is an amatuer world champ who impressed in big Huntington Beach during the last US Open. Alana Blanchard will be hoping for big waves to show her stuff after a poor 2010 was brightened by a QS win in Hawaii. Bethany Hamilton will return and Erica Hosseini, an American also does media and modelling work is blogging her way here. According to her feed she arrived a few day ago and has had two waves and as many coffees.

WQS Breaka Burleigh Pro is live

The real pros are due next round but there is plenty of good surfers still surfing. Current heat includes Occy and Nicky Wood.

Mundaka Sneaks Up

The Billabong Pro in Mundaka has started a couple of days ago with about 8 heats in the elimination round one run during the low tide window.

Apparently the bank is all time (Luke Egan claims it as the best in 20 years) but the swell isn't helping. The last two days have been flat and it is likely that today will be the same. Contest Director, Mike Parsons, thinks there will be a decent swell late in the contest waiting period.

Mundaka has been a bit of a bust in the last few years with only three or four heats of last year actually run there. The back up beach is crappy but apparently has a bank if they are forced there.

Webcasts from Billabong are always good and you can expect Luke Egan and Occy to commentate sometime. The video highlights and heats on demand are always top class.

Parko Rules Again

For the third time this year Parko has smashed his way into first in a WCT event. Parko started the final with a 9.47 and backed up with a 6.5. Damien Hobgood was chasing at least a high 8 from halfway through the heat and spent the 3 minutes in combo land.

Parko deserved to win and had been on all contest. He had two 10s and two of the ten highest heat scores. Only his semi-final was close

Yesterday was a classic day of contest surfing. The waves just got better and better and almost everyone was going off.

Slater was unbelievable in his round 2 heat against Nic Muscroft. He scored 18.84 out of 20 and had a throw away score of 9 ! If you only watch one heat on demand then make it this one. In round three he got a total of six and his 10th title might be on hold till next year despite there still being enough events.

Dane Reynolds just missed the final by a smidge but as a consolation won the hugely expensive Nixon watch for the highest heat total. One of his round two waves was so long he got dropped in on by a free surfer way down the line.

Not surprisingly Occy won round two of the Icons clash by less than a point. Just gives them an excuse to try again at Mundacca, a left.

The next event is the Hurley at Trestles in the US from 13th September.

Jennifer Smith from the US won the WLT title for the second time at the Roxy Jam in France. She beat Chelsea Williams in the semis in waves that looked fun but no more special that a pretty average beach break.

Round 2 and onwards

Round two at J-Bay is on. The waves are really good but not that big. They are a little inconsistent but there are long, long, long walls and some great barrels.

So far Taj has lost to a local wildcard after spending much of the heat in combo land. This is his second 17th so he will have to have excellent results for the rest of the year.

2008 WQS Champ Nathaniel Curran has finally won two heats in a row.

Mick Fanning just gotten beaten despite holding an 9 and a high 8 in the highest scoring heat so far.

Parko was on fire but is so smooth he hardly looks like he is trying.

The next heat is a killer Jordy Smith vs Dane Reynolds, the battle of the next generation. Both have smashed their first waves with huge carves, barrels and floater. 8.50 vs 7.83.

Slater will be in the heat after. It will be interesting to see what he rides.

In round one of the "Clash of the Titans" Curren beat Occy. The next heat is just before the final. Bet Occy wins for one all.

J-Bay WCT Starts This Week

One of the best WCT events of the year starts later this week. The Billabong Pro usually scores decent waves on most days and they are perfectly suited to the styles of Taj, Parko, Mick, Jordy and Slater.

The organisers have added a special heat - OCCY v Tom Curren. Both were fierce competitors at the height of their competitive careers, both drifted off the circuit in the middle and both won world titles on their return. Also they have both won 8 of the 16 heats they have had against each other.

You don't have to search far to see that both are still surfing at a very high level and if there are decent waves this will be an exhibition you won't want to miss.
