Round two finally over
It seems to have been going for ever but the Quikie Pro in France has only just finished round two and then went on a break.
Taylor Knox continues his run beating Adriano De Souza and he'll take on young gun John Florence in the first heat of round three.Yadin Nichol is out as are both Hopgoods and Josh Kerr.
Taj takes on Kolohe Andino, who finally made it into the third round. Slater has Jadson Andre, Joel gets Pat Gudaskas but Mick Fanning has dangerman Dane Reynolds. A loss here would hurt his title run but not be fatal.
With five days left and nothing perfect on the forecast expect the event to be a bit of a luck fest.

Round one done
They have finished the remaining round one heat in France and moved on to the King of the Groms event. There is a fair bit of swell but 90% close outs.
All of the heats in the main event today were won by the only surfer with a two wave total over 10, except the second last one where no one could get into double figures. Julian Wilson and Owen Wright were the only top seeds losing today.
The industry people talk up the France event every year but it is always crappy. The waves are so flukey that you need as much luck as you do ability to get through. If Europe wasn't one of the traditionally strongest markets for surf ware I'm nor sure we would still be watching this event.
Quik Pro France
The Quiksilver Pro France started two days ago in its usual iffy surf. Its a bit hard to get excited about a non-elimination round one held in close outs.
Parko was the only surprise losing to Dane Reynolds but he will have a decent shot in round two. Reynolds could be the fly in the ointment as he is likely to come up against one of the title contenders in round three.
It was a lay day yesterday and the next call will be early afternoon our time. You can watch it at the normal places.

New/old World Champ
Steph Gilmore has won another world title, winning the Roxy Pro in France last night.
The waves so bad early that I couldn't be bothered watching for more than a couple of minutes in the first round so can't tell you how she surfed or anything else.
The stupid thing is that it is July and the world champ has been picked and there is only one event left.

Taj out
No old bulls left. Taj lost to Julian Wilson and Taylor Knox has just been beaten by Media. Gabriel had a neat perfect 19 plus semi score.

Old bulls v Young Bulls
Today is finals day in France and its young versus old for each heat except the one in the water at the moment. So far its one all. Taylor Knox has continued his run beating Michel Bourez but in an upset 17 year old rookie Gabriel Medina has thrashed Slater 16.66 to 8.60.
The current quarter is Jordy v Alejio Muniz followed by the old bull Burrow and young bull Julian Wilson.
I would love to recommend that you watch it on the webcast but again it just jumps backwards and stops then jumps backwards again. It is 100% unwatchable. Shame Quiksilver shame.

More of the same
Taj, Slater, OwenWright, Julian Wilson and Jordy Smith are all through to round four. Taylor Knox is having his best contest for ages and new boy Gabriel Medina is also through.
Taj just made it after beating Travis Logie by a fraction of a point. Taj's two scoring waves were short on manoeuvres but those he pulled off were massive. Martin Potter and the other commentator didn't think he got the score on his last wave, a big backhand smash and finished the heat off talking up Logie. Unfortunately for them the score on Taj's last wave took forever to get locked in and wasn't final until seconds after the heat finished.
Logie is one of my least favourite surfers on tour. For years he clung to the bottom rung, barely winning a single heat all year but to give credit where its due his surfing this year has improved massively. He had a third in Tahiti and is only just losing a couple of other heats.
After some fog this morning France time a lay day has been called.

Quikie Pro France
The Quiksilver Pro has started in France. Round one is done and round two is in the water right now.
Taj is through to round three as is Slater, the back from injury Jordie Smith and Fanning. Young guns Owen Wright and Julian Wilson also topped their first heat.
The big casualty so far is Parko, who has just been eliminated by a Moroccan wildcard in a heat where neither had a double figure two wave score.
The waves have some size with sets in the eight foot range. However there is plenty of crap amongst the nuggets.
As usual the Quiksilver webcast is terrible. It doesn't stream properly, keeps stopping and jumping back to repeat the same footage over and over. It didn't happen at the Trestles or Chopes or any contest not sponsored by Quiksilver.

Steph Gilmore got a little bit of revenge for losing the world title by beating Carissa Moore in the final of the Roxy Pro. This is Gilmore's best result this year.

Mick wins
Mick Fanning has just beaten Kelly Slater by a combo score in the final of the Quiksilver Pro in France. The swell had jacked with the tide and it was a solid double overhead breaking onto a shallow bank. Looking at the waves you can see how the French invented the guilotine !!!
Slater pulled off wave of the event in the semis. After taking off under the lip and his board sliding tail first down the face the olny people that thought he had made it were Kelly and the cameraman. Ten points and no claim.
Mick lucked into two surfable waves but took a massive wave on the head and broke his legrope. He deserved the scores he got, especially his last wave but I have two complaints, Mick claims like a Brazillian and has the worst poo stance on the CT.
Mick will go to third, Kelly will stay at number one but with a larger buffer over Jordy. However when you consider that the worst two events are dropped (and there are three left) Kelly pulls away. On my adjusted scores he is 42500 (with his worst two results a 9th and 17th leaving nothing lower than 3rd), Jordy 33750 (drops a 17th and a 5th leaving three 5th, a second and a win), Mick 32000 (dropping 9ths but keeping two 9th in his score), Taj 30000 (having to hold a 17th in his score line) and Dane 28500 (dropping 17th and a 9th but having nothing higher than third). Kelly and Jordy can both afford to have another bad day, especially Jordy whose second lowest score is a 9th but Taj must make finals and hope the others bomb.
Next event is the Rip Curl in Portugal on Thursday. Current rumour is that there will be swell from week one. Supertubes is much like France - closeouts with the odd epic tube, expect plenty of claims. This is the replacement event for Mundacca which has failed to deliver for the last few years.

Too much choice
There is too much live sport right now. I'm flicking between the test match in India, the AFL Grand Final and the finals day at the Quikie.
Swell is big and clean but still thumping. Paddling out is hard but the jet ski is struggling even more. It looks like a crazy beach break version of Pipe and Backdoor

Just the finals to run in France. Slater has Michel Bourez, who should have beaten him in round four. If he wins he will get another heat on one of his rivals as Fanning and Jordy battle each other in quarter four.

Kelly Houdini !!!
Slater has pulled another classic escape act in round four. Michel Bourez was on fire early with some big turns and a bazza or two. Slater was comboed and with a total just over one with the heat half done. Owen Wright was never in it as he wasn't getting any decent waves.
Then Slater picks up a full stand up tube followed by a massive floater where he spent more time free falling than in the lip. The 8.5 put him back into the game.
Michel took an impossible dumper which was so powerful it snapped his Firewire, a task most trucks can't do. While he was trying to get in against a rip that looked like a river, Slater locked in another barrel, came through the curtain and the threw an air reverse for a high seven and the heat. He might have been just a little overscored but he has done enough to deserve it.
Slater to the quarters, Owen and Michel to round five.
Jordy Smith has just free fell into a deep pit but was whacked when he tried to sneak through another section.

Then Slater picks up a full stand up tube followed by a massive floater where he spent more time free falling than in the lip. The 8.5 put him back into the game.
Michel took an impossible dumper which was so powerful it snapped his Firewire, a task most trucks can't do. While he was trying to get in against a rip that looked like a river, Slater locked in another barrel, came through the curtain and the threw an air reverse for a high seven and the heat. He might have been just a little overscored but he has done enough to deserve it.

Jordy Smith has just free fell into a deep pit but was whacked when he tried to sneak through another section.

Everyone is claiming at the Quiksilver Pro in France. Round three is into the last heat. The waves are nice when they aren't closing out. It is still one of those day where only one in twenty are surfable but at least its sort of offshore.
Taj lost in the first heat as did the higher seed in the first three heats. You compare Taj and Dan's second wave and see if you think Dan deserved a nine. I don't and think that once again Taj was ripped off. Just like Cheyne Horan before him the judges seem to want to score his competitors higher for smaller moves.

Still live
Another high seed bites the dust with Bobby not getting anything decent.
Tommy Whitaker has just opened his heat quickly with a long clean tube and a big layback rebound off the foam. 8.83. Tiago Pires hasn't stood up yet.
Nearly time for bed as there are no real blockbuster heats left this round and I don't know how many more times I can bare looking at beach commentator Jake Patterson's crap sunglasses !!!!!

Luke Munro has beaten AI after his high 9 and then a toss up between two long clean tubes. As is typical of France it seems that lucking into the rare one that stays open is the only way to win.
AI's remote push for the title has now taken a kicking and his elimination is good for the front runners as they won't have to battle him in waves where his claiming would be worth an extra point.
Bobby Martinez and Dan Ross in the water now. Bobby is higher rated but it will be difficult to thread the barrel backhand.

Luke Munro has just been spat out of a massively deep tube at the Quikie Pro in France for a 9.77. Twice it looked like he was done but came out clean.
This is the second heat of the day as they try to get the contest back on track after a number of lay days due to little surf. Currently its 4 - 6 foot but messy. Most waves are smashing close outs but every now and then there is a gem.

France is crap
Three heats of round two were run in pussy little waves last night before it was give up as a joke. After a day of massive close outs the next day was small close outs.
If this is what a "Dream Tour" venue looks like maybe Bunbury should be part of the tour. We've got beaches full of close outs everywhere and if you come in winter you can get shore breaking, mud coloured barrels as well.
King of the Groms continues at the moment in pretty average surf. Apparently the swell is due to kick at the same time as the storm that makes it hits the coast.
