Still swell

Still offshore.

Plenty of long period ground swell pulsing through and the wind is pretty good. Only problem is that nowhere locally can handle the size.

I'm guessing here but Capel Cut would have been good and depending on the tide the Wall might have worked because it was from a pretty favourable direction.

Meant to be offshore again tomorrow so if you're on school holidays or got the day off it will be worth heading south.

Winter ?

Freezing cold and plenty of people around Bunbury woke to hail this morning.

The wind has been ridiculous all day again. Walked the dogs to the Wall this morning when it was hitting 50 ks again. There was some swell but the wind was blowing straight into out and flattening it out before it could peak.

On the plus side I got my first stand up paddle board this afternoon. Damn e-bay ! Promise I won't use it to surf anytime it's reasonable - I'll be riding a proper board then.

Another one

A deep low should bash us over the next few hours. The warning is for widespread destructive winds and maybe hail. Lows move slower and pack more punch than fronts so tie down anything thats left from yesterday. The 100 kmh winds would be nearly double what we coped yesterday and last night.

Swell is meant to be between four and eight metres at Naturaliste. At the moment its 3.4 and rising. Locally its 1.10 at a very short 10 seconds.

No waves obviously and the beach is a mess. The Wall might be okay if the wind dies down a little but I would wait it out until at least lunch time. You don't want to be out there when it gets worse.

WEATHER SITUATION

A deep low is moving south of the state and is expected to effect the south of
the state during Tuesday. The low is expected to cause WIDESPREAD DAMAGING WINDS
to 100 kilometres per hour which could result in DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY in
the area near Cape Leeuwin, extending to southwest of a line Mandurah to
Katanning to Albany during the morning then to remaining parts during the
afternoon. 

HIGHER THAN NORMAL TIDES may result in flooding of low-lying coastal areas.
DANGEROUS surf conditions are likely which could cause SIGNIFICANT beach
erosion.

This system is expected to be windier than a typical winter front and is likely
to produce the kind of weather that is only seen once or twice a year.

Cape Leeuwin has recorded a gust of 91 km/hr at 5:43 AM WST.

Spring

Day 1 of Spring and we have perfect Spring weather - sunny one minute, raining the next. Winter was a complete dud again but we will still probably get some more bad weather in the next few weeks. There were no real banks formed anywhere.

Every year that I have lived here (and that is quite a few) we've had a nice bank at the Clam but there hasn't been a single Clam day so far this year.

The Wall had some nice sand but not enough swell. The Groyne has had a day or two and Fraggles maybe an hour or two. The plus was the rip bank at Juniors but only for a week or so. BP Reef continues to be MIA and if you tell people that it was once the most consistent winter wave and broke off the back bombie they think you are on drugs !

There is no surf today as you would have already guessed. There has been four surfable hours all week and if you were on it quickly enough you could have had some fun. But I'm guessing most people (including me) just wrote the week off.

The seven day forecast has onshores till next Friday.

Gross again

Another front moving the sand around. There are no surfable waves around locally.

The one guy out at the Wall is a bit deluded because it is way to messy and raw to be working. It is possible that if the wind settles a bit then it could clean up later but the front is meant to strengthen not calm.

They were right

Front started to hit early this morning and it has been windy and rainy since.

Don't expect much change or to get ocean wet today. I'm guessing that a few will head to the Wall for a look but you'd need to be keen.

As usual in this weather the harbour buoy has dropped out.

WEATHER SITUATION

A strong cold front and associated rain band approaching the South West of the
state may cause HEAVY RAINFALL that could cause FLASH FLOODING and DAMAGING
WINDS to  100 kilometres per hour which could result in DAMAGE TO HOMES AND
PROPERTY from mid to late Sunday morning about the SW district, extending
throughout Sunday afternoon and evening. DANGEROUS GUSTS in excess of 125
kilometres per hour could cause SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY IN
LOCALISED AREAS.

HIGHER THAN NORMAL TIDES are expected near the south coast .

People in the southwest of WA experience a front as windy as this about 5 times
per year.

Update

The Wall is a no-go, no enough swell and the wind straight on to it.

The conditions are getting worse by the minute but the blue sky seems to be tempting some to at least try.

Swell heading down and seas up - 0.72 @ 11 and a bit, winds NNE and gusting to 29 kmh (up from 9 in the last two hours).

Don't be fooled

It might be sunny but the northerly is in and strengthening.

Theres a little swell and a few having a bash here and there but its not really worth the effort.

Front coming tonight with a decent blow. Maybe next week ?

I'm going to walk the dog to the Bay soon so there might be another post if the Wall is ok.

Wintery

Bit of a very late glass off but with the low tide there wasn't much on offer.

The Bay looks like it has a bank or two forming. There were three out at the Wall, one way out the back (but not far enough) and two in the normal spot. There were some swells coming in but breaking to close to the rocks. In the 15 minutes I watched it for they didn't get a wave and probably only missed one that could have been surfable.

More bad weather tomorrow and stronger onshore winds. The swell is meant to be coming up but the conditions will make it pus. Stay inside.

Never wait

I just decided to have a run down to the Bay. It wasn't any good (although the one guy out seemed to be happy enough) but the Wall had a little mal-loving runner right out the back. The tide was just right and swell in the right direction but it was too late.

Would have been a bit sharky by myself but looked fun. Bummer.

On the plus side both are showing some signs of being ready if the right swell comes through.

I wonder

On days like today what Bunbury would be like if a massive clean swell hit. There are some huge waves capping and breaking way out and some big walls amongst the carnage.

The harbour buoy is 1.19 metres and Naturaliste is just a touch under six. Winds have been gusting in the high 30 kph since early this morning and as high as 50 at times. Augusta is being smashed as usual with winds getting close to double our worst.

Wouldn't be planning on getting wet for a few days (excluding getting caught in the rain). Neither Fraggles or the wall have decent banks yet but this front will help.

Stay home

Blowing a gale and has been for days. There was a 72 kmh gust around 7.00 am and it isn't backing off.

The beach is a massive washing machine. Shouldn't really call it the beach because the water is lapping on the dunes, old swimming baths, rocks, sea wall and anything else that is usually dry. There are huge waves bashing in  everywhere.

It looks like the Wall is the only place surfable. There are a truck load of cars at the gate but with spray coming over the seawall I wasn't walking down to find out. Looking from a couple of other vantage points I would say there are waves but they won't be very good.

Keep out

The ocean was a no go area today as massive waves battered the beach. With no reference point it was hard to tell how big the Back Beach was but I suspect it was a solid eight feet. I watched a wave break probably ten time further out than normal and then smash into the rocks.

The wind is back up again and it looks pretty marginal for the next few days at least. I have been told that due to the west in the swell the Wall was flat but it might start to fire with the right tide.

Stormsurf.com shows some massive swells out to sea and predicts over 30 feet on the weekend.

Another front

Another front on the way. It should hit any time now and be basically over by tomorrow morning.

There is a huge crowd out at The Wall for the arvo session. There are plenty of waves rolling off the inside but with 20 plus out it is a bit of dodgem cars, especially as a group of mindless body boarding groms as sitting down the line and dropping in on everyone. One was lucky that a shortboarder sacrificed himself and his board on the rocks rather than into his head.

There is a nice bank at The Wall at the moment. It is really close to the rocks and closer to the beach than normal. There isn't meant to be a massive wind with this front but the swell at Naturaliste has peaked over four metres but is slowly dropping. Might be some more Wall waves tomorrow.

The best surfers of the session needed no boards and were way out the back. Two show off dolphins were cruising, jumping out in front of the swells and doing a roll in the air. You could almost hear them say "beat that humans !"

The advantage of being on holidays is that you can try to time your surfs around the crowds and conditions.

I had a second bite at the Wall this arvo. The crowd was five and the waves seemed cleaner and better than this morning. The sun was out so the air temp. was nice

The problem ? The zip on my wettie got stuck and after three goes of putting it on and off I pulled it hard enough to rip the zip off the rubber. No surfing for me and it looks like I'm shopping for a new suit tomorrow.

Those guys that were wrapped up got some nice waves with frequent sets rolling through. It was probably one of the better Wall days that I have seen for surfability.

Washing machine

The rain may have died down a little but there is still plenty of wind.

The only place surfable is the Wall. It's not great but it isn't bad either. The swell isn't big enough for it to break out the back but it is hitting close to the rocks on the inside. You have to be careful not to get smashed against the wall but if you get one of those that pushes wider you might be alright.

The crowd when I left was building very quickly and there won't be enough waves to go around, especially without the long paddle back out.

NIce Day

Perfect Spring weather and a decent ground swell. The harbour bouy has been over 0.75 for most of the day and Naturaliste was just under three. Coastalwatch was reporting down south as solid, clean and 4 - 6'+.

Locally the lack of banks was still causing a problem. Sidewash was popular all day with BP and Juniors drawing a little after work crowd. The Bay was touched by the wind and messy. There were even a few lines showing at the Wall and across the Cut. Fraggles had some steamers coming through but the lulls were horrendous.

The wind will have a touch of north in it tomorrow and the swell is heading down. However you still might get some half decent waves, maybe at Capel, Binningup or down south.

Change

There was a change in the weather and with the clear skies and light winds came some decent sized, ridable waves. Only really Fraggles and the Wall weren't reasonable and even then there were some surf ski at the Wall and waves at Fraggles if you wanted them.

Everywhere from Fawlty Towers to the Bay had people out late this afternoon. Most people seemed to get at least one or two that made the paddle and the cold worth it.

BP had waves up and down the beach from the rip off Juniors all the way to the Groyne (where a decent looking bank is starting to form).

Tomorrow is predicted to have light offshores early with pretty light WNW in the arvo. The swell should straighten a bit so it could be okay again. But it is winter so you never know.

Batten down

The next front is just starting to smash in. The wind has picked up and the rain is pretty solid. Just went to check out the Wall but the rain turned me back. There was a few cars parked at the entry so I'm thinking that people got there before the weather. With the lowish tide it was probably alright.

Fraggles is big and messy and waves along the back beach are very very solid.

Looks like an afternoon to stay inside. I suspect that tomorrow wont be great either.

BIg Swell

Over a metre the harbour for the first time in ages and between four and five at Naturaliste. Too bad the wind is shitty.

There was a pile of cars at the end of the inner harbour late this arvo so I suspect the Wall might have been working. It was too cold and wet for me to bother taking my lazy arse down there to look. I expect it to be full of groms tomorrow, especially with no junior sport.
