Spring

Day 1 of Spring and we have perfect Spring weather - sunny one minute, raining the next. Winter was a complete dud again but we will still probably get some more bad weather in the next few weeks. There were no real banks formed anywhere.

Every year that I have lived here (and that is quite a few) we've had a nice bank at the Clam but there hasn't been a single Clam day so far this year.

The Wall had some nice sand but not enough swell. The Groyne has had a day or two and Fraggles maybe an hour or two. The plus was the rip bank at Juniors but only for a week or so. BP Reef continues to be MIA and if you tell people that it was once the most consistent winter wave and broke off the back bombie they think you are on drugs !

There is no surf today as you would have already guessed. There has been four surfable hours all week and if you were on it quickly enough you could have had some fun. But I'm guessing most people (including me) just wrote the week off.

The seven day forecast has onshores till next Friday.

Sorry

I planned on blogging the conditions when I first got to work but as usually was under the pump from the get go.

It was wobbly and offshore first thing with only two a long way out. There was a reasonable slice of size and some runners if you could get the right one

Late this arvo there was still plenty out. The wind was onshore but just making it crumbly. Plenty of waves and some little walls.

The clam is starting to form a bank and sand has moved around at Hungry Hollow. A rip is allowing some shape out the front of Extensions.

Should be clean tomorrow and maybe worth a sickie.

All day offshore

Started with a very small swell this morning but perfect condition and ended a little bit bigger.

I finally got a decent wave surfing the Clam late this afternoon. The waves were closing out a little on the low tide but there were the odd decent one in between. There were plenty of peaks up the beach.

Forecast for possible showers over the next few days.

Early burst if spring

Some nice spring like weather over the weekend and as with the rest of the week there has been some waves, especially in the morning. And as usual I haven't been able to get out until now and it was crappy.

There is a nice A frame at the Clam with a fast left on the other side of the channel. A rip bank in front of the Surf Club has been good for weeks now and was really good on some of the glassy mornings this week.

Juniors has a nice rip bowl both ways in front of the rocks. BP Groyne has a little shape but is also shutting down a lot. There are banks up and down BP beach.

Showers on and off next week so there could still be some days to get wet.

Passing time

The last couple of days have had swell in the afternoon but the tides have been funky and the wind was messing it up a bit today. It looks rain ahead but not much wind, although it will have a fair bit of west mixed with the north.

To keep your enthusiasm up here are a few photos of the Clam and BP on Saturday. Hopefully the banks won't be too destroyed before the next sunny day.

Freezing

Third attempt at posting over the last few days. Blogger changed look and kept crashing my posts.

Not the it really mattered much anyway. It has been fairly quiet surf-wise for the last week but if you were in the right place at the right time you could have scored a wave or two. There are some nice banks around and I got a LAGO at the Clam yesterday on the mal. Nothing great but with plenty of potential if the swell lifted.

Perfect conditions today, except for swell. Rain is forecast for the next few but wave action is a bit ify.

Apparently an 18 metre swell pounded Tassie over the weekend. Might be some big big waves at Shippies if the wind is right.

Same

Still plenty of north swell pumping through but also still choppy and a bit wonky. Whippies is the pick but all along the back beach there are waves.

While I was checking it out about 3.30 a single wave set came through at a solid 4 foot plus and really workable if you were out far enough (which no one was).

Coastalwatch indicates that there are some waves on the Dunsborough side of the cape. With the Naturaliste buoy showing over two and a metres of due north sea and a two metre plus west swell they probably are. I bet there are more than a few out at the Wedge near Inji hopping for a few mor Biancca style pits.

Windy

Strong NE winds are still blowing making some surfable by difficult conditions locally. The surfclub/clam area is the pick and BP is blown out.

Not as clean as yesterday but still some nice waves if you can avoid the frustration and the drainers.

Did you get some ?

Down the south end of the Surf Club beach just before the Clam was the pick but there were plenty of corners everywhere. BP Groyne had some wide of the rocks and there was a little bank at BP with a few out as well.

Light SSE wind, plenty of swell and some banks. You need to be out there now !!!

Juniors has a great A frame bank on the south side. BP reef has some nice lefts on the inside take off and there is a decent looking bank on the beachie. The swell is a bit big for the surfclub, Clam and Hungries at the moment but could be moving enough sand for some banks to form over the next few days.

There is a very small crowd at Juniors and the Reef but no more than five at each spot. A lone booger was having a lunch time ball pulling into a decent length tube before it shut down on him. Eden is ruling the reef as usual getting longer and faster rides than anyone else.One guy got one of the cleanest and longest lefts I have ever seen at Juniors, finishing off just short of being in front of the reef take off spot. Plenty of rights as well but it seems to be a little hard to stay in position due to the rip.

I'm out with my back which might be why it is good ! Tomorrow has offshores forecast and the swell looks like falling but still being a round. Might be worth a run to Binningup or Capel but the long weekend crowds might take down south off the radar.

Snapper Rocks !

The BP Groyne became Snapper Rocks with this take off resulting in a neatly broken surfboard.

Plenty of swell around with offshore winds first up this morning. BP Groyne was throwing some nice barrels between closeouts.

The Back Beach was pretty busy with as mix of body boarders and surfers getting the odd corner here and there. I saw one body boarder lock into a nice long tube and emerge clean.

There were still the odd places away from the crowd for the patient. There was only one at the Clam and a small sprinkling at a dumping Bay.

The wind swung southerly quickly but didn't mess it up too much at the start. Could be okay tomorrow.

Whales

Finally able to shuffle things around so that I could get a very early surf in before work. Headed down the beach at first light to see that there was still a little swell and a light northerly blowing. There was a bit of a bubble off the surf club so I stopped for a look and it was a whale.

Watched it for a little while but still wanted a surf. BP was a disappointment. The swell was very inconsistent and the high tide was stopping it from hitting the banks. No matter how hard I tried I wasn't seeing anything surfable.

On the way home I decided to check the Clam. Now there were two whales. I was on the new lookout by myself but no more than five minutes later the carpark was packed with whale watchers.

Another Disapointing Winter

According to the calendar winter is over and it is now spring. Unfortunately someone forgot to tell the weather.

This was probably the worst winter for surf that I can remember in my 14 odd years here.

There was not a single bank at BP all winter. The reef was always a three section left in winter but it hasn't broken on the second shallow take off all year (and hasn't worked for the last four or five). Juniors is never good in winter but we usually get a decent rip bank off the southern rocks. It has threatened to appear a few times but never done it.

The BP Groyne has been surfed a bit but the bank and rip just aren't there. The sand isn't getting washed out and the weed is getting washed in. Fraggles broke about three times early and only once was more than a novelty.

The Bay was a little more consistent but not all time. The Wall broke a few times but you wouldn't have surfed it is there was any other choice.

The Surf Club had a few banks for a few days between swells. The Clam failed to really get one of the good winter banks and was mostly a close out. On the days it did work it was packed.

Bright sides were the opening of the path to the Bay and the start of construction on the BP look out but that's about it.

Fingers crossed for spring.

Surfable

There are a few fun waves around Bunbury if your keen. Conditions are glassy and the wind fairly calm but ready to turn onshore any second.

Big crew on a few peaks around the Clam. Saw one guy lock into a beautiful death barrel on the right.

There are a couple of girls and two goat boaters at BP reef dodging the rocks. Still heaps of weed on the beachies there and the groyne is chock full of aquatic plant life.

If you aren't scared of the locals it could be worth the trip to Capel Cut.

Didn't go to the Bay but judging from the number of cars and the conditions at BP it will have waves.

Classic Winter Morning

The wind is strong, offshore and freezing old but making for some nice waves. The tide is a bit high and the waves a little hard to catch but there is the odd zipper making it worth the trouble.

The Bay has some nice clean wedges and is worth the walk.

BP reef has a little crowd and a few lefts off the reef and the odd right to the north.

The Clam is packed and provided you don't get sucked to far out by the rip is presenting some fast lefts with a bit of a crowd.

Swell Drop

The swell drop massively overnight but the wind stayed light (if onshore) all day.

The Clam has a bit of a bank between two massive weed plumes. Late this afternoon there were a few out at BP and the groyne. The waves were pretty full and difficult to catch but there was one young grom that was having a ball.

Swell is meant to be small tomorrow as well.

Nothing

No posts in the last few days because there really hasn't been much in the way of waves locally. Plenty of swell but no waves.

There is one guy out at the surf club this arvo but I don't know why he has bothered. There is a huge rip at the Clam which might lead to a good bank when the weather clears.

Not looking that great for the next week but the winds aren't forecast to be too bad in the next two or three. It will be a bit of wait and see.

Clam Firing

The Clam has entered that really short period each year where it sits in the middle of its usual default state (ie: waveless or closing out).

People have been on it most of the day and there is a fair crowd this afternoon. Winds have been light and will probably stay that way for a few more days with a high moving through. Mornings have been the best with today presenting a rolling right as I went to work.

Get in Quick

There are a few waves around Bunbury. The swell seems a little smaller but the conditions are calm and glassy.

My dawn patrol partners dropped out but there are a few out at the Clam which seems to have a nice peak.

The groyne at BP is working but weedy and the banks are still out the front of the surf club.

The forecast is for the wind to be fairly light all day but it will be onshore when it does kick in.

Get Out There

Nice day, if still a little cold, and there are waves.

Just about everywhere is worth a paddle. The Bay is very full but some wedges for the lids that are out there.

There are banks up and down the stretch from Extensions to the Clam and around Hungry Hollow.

Bigger ones are coming through at the Clam but they are closing out a bit more.

Swell is around 0.6 and dropping and the winds very light southerly. They should stay light most of the day.

The second week of the school holidays should start with some waves and the get wet later in the week.
