Motion

There is a chunky new swell in the water this morning. Lots of water moving around but not very surfable at this stage although there is the odd medium one between close outs.

If you read this early enough it would be worth a quick run south. Coastalwatch is calling 10+ with offshores.

Naturaliste has gone from two metres at lunch time yesterday to almost four at the moment. Its jumped nearly a metre since midnight and looks like it might still be going up. Stormsurf has a big blob of 20' + swell on it model.

The harbour buoy is 0.88 with a long 14 second period.

Here it comes again

Another front on the way tomorrow with damaging winds. Good job I didn't put the outdoor furniture back after the last one.

Bit of a pre-front northerly wave for those who were quick this afternoon. I saw a guy take a clean head height drop on what looked like the best peak in front of the surf club.

The sea and swell have both swung north west and are climbing rapidly.  The sea is 1.12 and the swell 0.73. The swell period has dropped four seconds since midday and is sitting on 10.

There are some weird blobs on the Stormsurf wave models for the next week or so. It has a 30 foot swell hitting Marges in 72 hours with Perth getting 18 - 20. Forty seven feet of swell is passing the south coast. There are then two follow up 15 to 20 foot swells in the following few days

The models can be a bit funky and this is super unusual

WEATHER SITUATION
A cold front moving over the area during Tuesday is likely to cause WIDESPREAD
DAMAGING WINDS to 100 kilometres per hour that could result in DAMAGE TO HOMES
AND PROPERTY. In isolated areas DANGEROUS GUSTS in excess of 125 kilometres per
hour could cause SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE OR DESTRUCTION TO HOMES AND PROPERTY.
DAMAGING winds are likely to develop about the Capes early on Tuesday morning
and extend to remaining parts later in the morning. Thunderstorms are also
possible.

Higher than normal tides may result in flooding of low-lying coastal areas in
the Geographe Bay area, including Busselton and Dunsborough, on Tuesday morning.

This is typical weather for this time of year.

Still here

Haven't  bothered going to the beach much this week. Today showed me that I haven't missed much.

The swell has been around the 0.4 mark but isn't breaking with anything surfable. A few groms and desperadoes tried at the reef and on the beachies matched their skill levels with the close outs but were still having buckets of fun.

The Stormsurf.com models don't look that flash for the near future. It has a dropping trend until the next front comes through around Thursday.

Rain

Quick bit of rain and a strong gust of wind about 9.00 pm. The harbour buoy is rising quickly and is over 0.4,although Naturaliste isn't going up that sharply. It looks like there is a fair whack of north in it so we might be getting it first. Some of the cloud is from Cyclone Iggy, which is heading down past Carnarvon, so maybe we'll get some swell on the weekend from it. The forecast is for showers, offshores and up to three metres of swell for tomorrow. I'm always disappointed when I hype myself up for waves but my blistered feet might keep me out of the water and guarantee waves for everyone else. Plus school is back - no groms.

Its back

Finally the harbour buoy is back in service, even if it only showing 20 centimetres of swell.

Needless to say it was flat today, with the swell kick not really showing and some very high tides.

Still flat

Another week almost over and still not even the smallest glimmer of a wave. The Naturaliste buoy was a massive 0.6 metres this morning, an very rare occurrence even in the middle of summer.

I have no confidence that there will be much of a turn around in the next few days although Coastalwatch is predicting a little pulse on Monday. Weatherzone is similar and has thrown up an all day onshore and maybe some rain tomorrow.

The only other thing of note in the last week was a report from a fisherman at Hungry Hollow that he caught a salmon (unusual) and then watched a 2 metre shark launch itself onto the reef. He thinks it was a bronze whaler. I'm sure there are always sharks around here so be careful. No weeing in your wetsuit !!!

Spring in the city

Another almost perfect spring day. The winds have been light but onshore and thee is still plenty of swell rolling through.

BP was the pick today with rideable waves from Barnacles to the groyne. Juniors was nice with some lefts and rights off the rip and a few wider ones. The low tide made the reef pretty sketchy but the odd one pushed off the bubbles for a short ride.

I surfed a couple off the reef and then a few out of a rip a little further north.
There was one guy at Juniors getting nice waves for his drop knee style and he was joined by some kids wagging school.

Looks like tomorrow might be similar but with light se winds early before a sse change. The swell is meant to still be hanging around the two metre mark at Naturaliste.

Lucky seven

The Naturaliste buoy has hit seven metres despite part of the site not working. The swell is pretty widespread with Rotto being over five metres and the same size was on the TV weather forecast for Perth where it never gets over 2.5 metres.

Both Bunbury buoys are out of action so no wind or wave readings are available but the port is closed due to the weather.

Don't plan for any improvement. The official forecast has winds in the west for the next three days at around thirty knots and the swell eventually easing to 3.5 metres for a time before cranking upwards again.

There really can be too much swell !

Around

The swell buoy has shown a few lumps this week. I escaped from Perth a day early and got a little excited when I checked the chart first thing.

However the early check of BP was not good. The swell was around but really inconsistent. What was coming in wasn't finding either the reef or a bank. The wind was from the north so I went to work instead.

Down south has supposedly been good if you can get there before the wind comes in.

Swell coming ?

The forecast is for a rising 3 metre swell tomorrow with strong off shores in the morning. The harbour buoy has risen a bit fairly quickly this afternoon so there could be waves tomorrow.

Down south early would be the go now that the groms are back at school if you can find the time.

Mystery swell

Woke up this morning to a Coastalwatch report that it was cranking down south. Four to six foot and rising with some off shores. Exposed breaks are for the experienced only apparently.

I was a bit bummed that I had to go to work but a quick checked on the way showed that there was some movement in the water but the swell hadn't arrived locally.

The Naturaliste buoy dropped out as usual but when it came back it was falling from 5 metres !!!

Locally it hit over 0.5 and a long period about lunchtime but the wind was southerly and then SSW. A check this arvo didn't produce any waves just little mush and the odd surging closeout. The swell is disappearing as quick as it appeared.

No waves

Last day of my holidays and it is flat. Did get a little fun surf on mal with a friend yesterday afternoon which washed some cobwebs away.

Apparently Perth is getting some rain but it doesn't look like we'll get any.

The swell buoy is under 0.2 and the wind is southerly already. the forecasts have been way off lately so it's anyone's guess what will happen next week. The best indicator that there might be waves on the way is that I will be working !!!!

Waves

The wind is so strong the biggest waves are in the inlet !!!!!!

The harbor buoy is around 0.15, which is as close to completely flat as you can get. The biggest issue is that it has been around that level for about a week.

Maybe a swell for Christmas ?

Hard

It's hard to find the energy to blog about surfing when it is so flat. Today the harbour buoy was reading a massive 12 centimetres, that not even half a primary school ruler!

The Pipe Master has started. They run this weird double heat format with two heats in the water at once. On one hand it is good because heaps of waves get ridden but it can be a confusing.

The top half of the 'CT surf in the next round. Even though Slater has already one the world title there is still plenty of interest as people scramble to make next years tour.

The waves were ok today. No real Pipe bombs, more Backdoor rights. The rip and the wind made it difficult but there were still plenty of decent waves.

Fuel TV are broadcasting live or you can catch a webcast via either the Triple Crown, Billabong or ASP website or on you IPhone or IPad using the ASP or Vans apps. I set my iPad up next to my work computer and watched a few heats this morning.

Nearly

Nearly waves again this arvo. Still offshore but with a fair bit of south and BP Reef was so close to being surfable that its not funny any more. Little waves were breaking inside the inside suck up but rolling nicely with backlit lips and transparent blue faces. Only problems were all the fin loving rocks along the line.

The Weather Bureau are forecasting a heat wave in Perth this week. Apparently that means three days in a row over 35 degrees. If it happens it will be only the fourth time since they started counting. We won't be that hot but might hit 30.

Surfalert is forecasting a couple of kicks in the swell for the Yallingup area, one tomorrow and one on Thursday. The harbour buoy is already showing a quick rise since lunchtime and Naturaliste has climbed to over two metres. With offshore it would be a good day to call in sick and head south.

Raw

A rawish new swell has hit and looks like it hasn't quite peaked yet. The harbour buoy is over 0.7 and Naturaliste is above 4 metros.

Locally the swell is hitting everywhere and there is the odd wave in between the close out sets. There are a few going for the Friday after work session at Juniors and BP Reef. One guy was getting some decent rides on his forehand off the reef and I saw a set a Juniors which looked like it was going to allow the surfer to get a deep pit but it just ran a little quick for him. Worth a hoot anyway.

I chose the hand board again because I'm a bit over dodging closeouts. A couple of nice quick ones at Barnacles before the battle against the rip and the drift made it not worth the effort.

Looks good for the weekend, especially if you can get away from town.

All hype ???

Plenty of swell but not massive. The harbour buoy showed a quick jump in size and period but has started to level and drop. The wind was from the south early and has picked up and turned onshore.

As usual when there is a decent swell to follow the Naturaliste buoy (and almost all of the others) have dropped out so it is hard to tell how much swell is around but it was hardly massively epic.

Lets see what Tuesday brings.

Still coming

The big swell is still coming. The Bureau of Meterology has forecast the swell to jump from 1.5 to 3 overnight and to hit 5 metres tomorrow. It isn't showing on any of the swell buoys yet. ALl of the other forecast sites and the WIN news are calling the swell too. However thats not to surprising since they all tend to use the same data.

There is a sniff of a follow up swell on Tuesday but with some ify winds. It will probably be too big for Bunbury and to south for Capel but Binningup may be the go.

We'll see if it actually turns up first.

Battering

This front is a beauty. Winds have been over 75 ks a few times during the night and it is still smashing through. At 6.00 am the wind was a gentle 76 kmh. Overnight it sounded like trucks were smashing into the house.

We are being hit by the low behind the main front. It's always worse when you can see speckled clouds on the satelitte following the main band and that is what we have at the moment.

It will be interesting to see what the beach is like. The swell at Naturaliste has doubled since lunch time yesterday and is now sitting near six metres. The harbour is nearly 1.3 but the seas are a touch under two metres. The ocean will be a good thing to look at but not to venture into.

BIg Swell

Over a metre the harbour for the first time in ages and between four and five at Naturaliste. Too bad the wind is shitty.

There was a pile of cars at the end of the inner harbour late this arvo so I suspect the Wall might have been working. It was too cold and wet for me to bother taking my lazy arse down there to look. I expect it to be full of groms tomorrow, especially with no junior sport.
