Sun and southerlies

Finally some sun, even if it did make the morning freezing cold (1.7 at 6.00 am). The swell has dropped to around three metres and the wind have swung into the south.

Went down south on the off chance that PK would be working but it wasn't. The swell was wrapping in as far a Rocky Point but I was disappointed again. I have got to that age where I surf the waves that will be the funnest not the best and often decide to go to a place because that is the type of wave I want to surf and go away dry if that place isn't on despite waves elsewhere.

The trip across the hill to Yallingup revealed double overhead conditions with only a five guys out (and a whale). The wind was cross shore and there were some decent walls to carve if you caught the right one. One guy caught a long, long left and ended up coming in at Rabbits because that was closer than coming into the reef.

Smiths had some nice conditions and a few people dotted amongst the beach break. It looked like the people shooting the Tim Winton film were out at Supertubes. There were a couple of jet skis but not much action.

Novelty waves

Looking at the severe weather forecast for tomorrow some of my favourite Dunsborough novelty spots might be worth a look. Places like the old Dunsbrough boat ramp or the corner of Eagle Bay could be a goer if the proper spots are blown out. Otherwise Wednesday might be ok for the Farm and Rocky Point before another front on Thursday.

If you haven't already it might be a good idea to drag loose stuff inside and check the insurance policy as it could be a bit blowy first thing. The last time I can remember a front being due around 6 am was when the tornado rip apart the town in 1995.

Coastal waters forecast

Tuesday: W/NW winds 30/40 knots with squalls to 55 knots in showers and thunderstorms. Winds easing to W'ly 20/30 knots late morning and W/NW 20/25 knots during the evening. Higher than normal tides and dangerous surf conditions expected north of Cape Leeuwin. Seas 2.5m to 3.5m. Swell to 5.0m.

Rain

Smallest touch of rain this morning and then back to how it has been for what seem to be the whole of this year !

Perfect conditions locally if there had been some swell but there wasn't.

My spy tells me that Cyclone Carlos sent some waves to the eastern side of Cape Naturaliste. Apparently there were waves at the Farm, Rockies and my favourite PK but the swell was really inconsistent. He was at Meelup and saw one roll all the way from behind the point through to the beach. I love that side and I'm spewing that I didn't think to make the trip.

East Coast

The east coast had waves today. Not the east coast of Australia like last week but the east coast of WA. With a decent sized swell there is surf on the Dunsborough side of Cape Naturaliste. But with the lack of fronts so far this year and a mixed up swell direction it wasn't top quality.

The swell was inconsistent and with enough size to get the shortboarders (well a collection of fish, mid lengths and normal boards) out. Crowds weren't that big but with the long lulls and strange take off spots it didn't take much.

There were people out everywhere to Castle Rock. Even spots that weren't usually surfed were being tried. I surfed the Rocky Point boat ramp on the mal. One guy at Eagle Bay was getting the odd head height take off. PK wasn't that great and there was a few out off Meelup point.

Could be better tomorrow at some of the northern spots when the wind goes more south west and the swell sorts its self out. Or it could go flat.

Wintery

Very much like winter today, onshore and grey.

The swell has come up a little and Coastalwatch are suggesting the Farm, Rockies or South Point could be goers. Locally there were the usual Sunday groms hitting onshore peaks here and there. Four chose the shorebreak at the Wall and even though it was tiny they were having a ball.

Fraggles had some nice but really inconsistent waves but no one out when I checked.

Down south the go today

Nothing local today.

However there were waves on the western side of the Cape today. Boneyards had a few out. Rocky Point was the pick with almost no crowd and sets up overhead in the morning. Little Rockies was clean and had a crowd of two.

The tide was to full and the swell to small for PK to be much good bu

t a SUP or two and a goat boater were able to enjoy the clean water and offshore lines.

Tomorrow looks similar weather-wise but no guarantee the waves will hang around.

Ok-ish

Light onshore, fullish and dirty. But that hasn't stopped some people from going out.

There are a few around the Surf Club and here and there.

A tow crew were trying around Hungry Hollow with little success.

Down south the swell was still around with waves at Rocky Point and the Farm. Colder and wetter there this morning than here.

Not a lot of surf

A very short offshore, glassy window this morning was a red herring as the onshore only stayed away for a very short period. Nothing worthwhile in Bunbury.

Bunkers Bay seemed to be the only place with surfable waves. The Farm had a crew but the waves were infrequent and had very little shape. Make you pine for the day before houses where the creek mixed with the reef and it broke about twice as far out and for twice as far.

There were a few out at Boneyards which seemed better but it is a long haul.

Rocky Point looked to be affected by the wind and no one out.

There is a possibly of a few clearer days next week but the weekend doesn't look that great. I'm sure the body boarders will be out at the Bay tomorrow anyway.

Small Waves

Nothing local and the swell is diving quickly. Its already under a metre in Bunbury and below two at Naturaliste. The wind is still strong and onshore.

Surfed the log on a very small but clean PK this morning with only two girls out. Waves were really inconsistent but every now and then there was a zipper allowing a long five. You could see the swell disappearing as decent waves got longer apart.

Rocky Point looked ok from a distance.

Capel cut is mud and while the swell was getting in, so was the wind.

My optimism for a weekend of waves is waning as fast as the swell.

Can give you details of everywhere because it feels like I have been there today.

The wind is howling down south. There is swell all the way to Dunsborough but the wind is chopping it to pieces. The Farm, Rockies and PK are a mess. The only people out are two kooks at the Dunsborough Boat Ramp.

The other side is HUGE. Windmills is breaking way out past the rocks and Sandpatches is solid and massive. The wind wasn't quite as bad but the waves weren't surfable.

On the way back we checked Capel and there is lots of swell getting in but the wind has messed it up.

The best surf is at ............the Surf Club !

Big, brown and with the odd face. Not many out but watched one get smashed on a sucky take off.

And it is cold and raining.

Looks like the bad weather has set in for another week but if you keep an eye on it you might just score.

It raining rain

Lots of rain in Dunsborough but not much surf around. Bunbury is lumpy and a few are trying the Surf Club and Bay but not really successfully.

Down south there are some messy waves at Rocky Point but the wind is picking up and it really isn't worth the hassle.

Capel is all over the shop and a no goer.

By the looks of the dark clouds and what was dumping on me when I was in Dunsborough we should get a decent drop in the next few hours.
