Offshore

It was sort of offshore late this arvo. Not surfable but a change from the smashing we got from late Thursday.

Yesterday was ridiculous. The winds were over 30 kph for the whole day and gusting around 50 hour after hour. The wind peaked at 82 kph at 2.30 and 74 at 7.30 pm.  At 7.00 am this morning the winds stopped gusting over 50 kph and it wasn't till 4.00 pm that gust finally fell consistently below 30 kph.

Swell wise it peaked at around 1.5 metres but combined with the big seas it hit 2.75 metres for a while. Even deep inside the harbour was rocking. The Naturaliste buoy peaked over five.

Tomorrow is forecast as being offshore in the morning but with a sea breeze around noon. I wouldn't think it would be very good but it might be work a quick look at the Capel Cut and maybe Binningup. The boogers should add the Bay to that list.

Some waves

I was working today so didn't get a look until late this afternoon. it looked like the conditions had stayed glassy for the whole day and there was still plenty of waves around as the sun was setting.

The tide was pretty low after the big highs of last week so there was plenty of dumpers. The handful out at the groyne were getting the odd wave that was walling. It looked like the rip was quite savage as they couldn't seem to get in the best spot and the waves were warping a little.

Three groms were sharing an after school session at clean BP reef and getting filmed by one of the Dad's. The waves looked quite nice, a little wasted on groms !

The Back Beach had a few dotted here and there but there were plenty of closeouts and weed.

I'm guessing that Capel would have been very good and so would have Binningup. As is the norm in winter tomorrow is a bit of a toss up, you'll just have to wait and see.

There is predictions of another big swell with the front on Friday. Apparently down south was in the 10 to 15 foot range for most of last weekend and could be coping another pounding this weekend. Maybe Brave the crowds at the Farm ??

Dropping

The swell dropped away pretty quickly but there are a few waves locally.

BP Reef and Juniors are popular again but no one seems to want to surf the really good bank on the beachies. There was also the odd on breaking close to the groyne that were empty but ok.

Tow crews seemed to come out every time it is clean. I haven't seen any that actually know what they are doing and today at the groyne was no exception. The driver knew how to drive but chopped up every wave and the surfers didn't have the skills or equipment to deal with the speed, blowing every move and getting smashed.

With my back worse I went to Binningup for a look. I haven't been there for ages despite having some really good days out the back and surfing it regularly a few years ago. No waves today and I was reminded about how frustratingly fickle it could be.

If you haven't got wet yet I is worth taking a look at BP and seeing if you can luck into something.

Get out there

Light SSE wind, plenty of swell and some banks. You need to be out there now !!!

Juniors has a great A frame bank on the south side. BP reef has some nice lefts on the inside take off and there is a decent looking bank on the beachie. The swell is a bit big for the surfclub, Clam and Hungries at the moment but could be moving enough sand for some banks to form over the next few days.

There is a very small crowd at Juniors and the Reef but no more than five at each spot. A lone booger was having a lunch time ball pulling into a decent length tube before it shut down on him. Eden is ruling the reef as usual getting longer and faster rides than anyone else.One guy got one of the cleanest and longest lefts I have ever seen at Juniors, finishing off just short of being in front of the reef take off spot. Plenty of rights as well but it seems to be a little hard to stay in position due to the rip.

I'm out with my back which might be why it is good ! Tomorrow has offshores forecast and the swell looks like falling but still being a round. Might be worth a run to Binningup or Capel but the long weekend crowds might take down south off the radar.

Even bigger

Massive 5 metres swell hit down south yesterday morning. Coastalwatch is reporting 12' + at Yallingup and bigger at Marges.

There was an bit of motion locally and I suspect that Capel and Binningup might have had some clean waves with offshore winds.

The swell is dropping but is near three at Naturaliste and 0.5 locally. Wind should have a touch of north but still be offshore most of the morning. Would be a nice day for a sickie if it wasn't school holidays.

NIce Day

Perfect Spring weather and a decent ground swell. The harbour bouy has been over 0.75 for most of the day and Naturaliste was just under three. Coastalwatch was reporting down south as solid, clean and 4 - 6'+.

Locally the lack of banks was still causing a problem. Sidewash was popular all day with BP and Juniors drawing a little after work crowd. The Bay was touched by the wind and messy. There were even a few lines showing at the Wall and across the Cut. Fraggles had some steamers coming through but the lulls were horrendous.

The wind will have a touch of north in it tomorrow and the swell is heading down. However you still might get some half decent waves, maybe at Capel, Binningup or down south.

Still coming

The big swell is still coming. The Bureau of Meterology has forecast the swell to jump from 1.5 to 3 overnight and to hit 5 metres tomorrow. It isn't showing on any of the swell buoys yet. ALl of the other forecast sites and the WIN news are calling the swell too. However thats not to surprising since they all tend to use the same data.

There is a sniff of a follow up swell on Tuesday but with some ify winds. It will probably be too big for Bunbury and to south for Capel but Binningup may be the go.

We'll see if it actually turns up first.

No more surf cam

The Bunbury surf-cam has been removed (with a pile of others like Denmark) from Coastalwatch. Apparently there is an issue with costs between Surf Lifesaving Clubs and Coastalwatch. Hopefully it will all be sorted out and the cameras (including a new cam at Binningup) will come back on line.

If the Bunbury surf-cam was working it would show you that it is dead flat !

Only One Thing Could Ruin Today

Offshore winds - all day
Swell - solid
Surface - glassy
Weed - gone
Sun - present
Banks - straight

Bunbury was basically a single close out from Mindalong to the Bay. However that hasn't stopped a pile of people going out. The dumpers were better suited to body boarders than stand ups and one guy at the Bay was getting nicely barreled this afternoon.

One surfer tried his hand at Fraggles and every now and then got a freak wave. There were even waves right of the end of the Wall. Ok not surfable waves but waves.

Didn't check but I'm sure that Capel Cut and Binningup had waves.

My spies from down south tell me that everywhere had swell but some wonky sand build ups and the swell direction made some places less than "all time". Apparently North Point was the spot or so the 40 who paddled out thought. About 6 foot plus with two massive tubes on each wave.

South Point was less crowded but good. A tow crew was out on Cow Bombie. Yallingup was big but Yallingup. The whitewater up the coast seemed to indicate that Bears would have been pumping. Even the Farm had surfable waves.

Tomorrow looks offshore but the wind could swing by Sunday and it is forecast to rain for most of next week. Great start for those groms on school holidays.

Bit Each Way

One of those days where you go out if your keen or can find enough reasons to stay dry if your not.

The wind is offshore (and cold). The swell is decent and looks to be quite solid.

The morning check had the Grammar School at out the Surf Club, one a Hungry Hollow, two at Juniors and one guy heading down to the Bay.

There were a lot of rocks sticking up at Juniors and it was one of those sessions where you seem to be always paddling and duck diving. The rest of BP was close outs and the Groyne is chockas with weed.



The Bay was very messy. Again you might get the odd wave but it will be hard work.

Didn't check but Binningup might be the best spot today, although the wind might just be a little strong.

The cloud is starting to burn off and it might be okay later as the wind isn't likely to swing.

Nicer Than Expected

Another front moved through last night but the morning dawned fine with light winds. However it was cold again.

Surf-wise there was some swell and the wind was southerly side shore. The Bay was the only place that was worth the paddle and the body board groms were all over it.

There was enough swell for Capel or Binningup but the tide was pretty high.

Didn't look all that desirable so I stayed out of the choc milk.

Tomorrow looks okay. The forecast keeps changing a little but next week doesn't look that great.

Hurray for Rain

Its finally raining properly. The swell is up and with the downpours is glassy and what wind there is is trying to be offshore.

However the waves are really for the desperate because nowhere is that great. Maybe Binningup or Capel might have waves but I haven't checked.

Saturday and Sunday are looking good this far out.
