Will be Mick Fanning v Taj as Mick has just narrowly beaten Julian Wilson.
This will be a tough draw for the West Aussie as Mick has been getting over scored consistently in the last few events.
Waves are good but inconsistent. The event will finish today.

Tired
Sat up (really laid in bed) watching the first three heats of the Hurley Pro last night. The waves early were clean and glassy but a little funky. Everyone was blowing moves and needed to be a bit conservative to get the scores. By afternoon it was onshore and ramping, making airs the go.
In heat two of round three Julian Wilson won riding the wining waves as the siren sounded. Next heat Taj won with the winning wave coming in the last 30 seconds. No surprises in the rest of the round with Yadin losing to John Florence.
Taj won his round four super heat against Slater and Julian Wilson, heading straight to the quarter finals. Wilson will take on Mick Fanning and Slater has Jeremy Flores.

What were they watching ?
Round one of the Hurley Pro was run overnight in small, slightly fat but contestable waves. The standard of the surfing was good but the judging was completely unfathomable. One surfer seemed to get a seven for some standard reos and someone else would get five for the same turns but an air reverse as well. The only consistencies were that vertical re-entries that popped the fins out the top of the wave were scored high and the top seed in each heat seemed to get the bonus points.
Watch the heats on demand that Parko, Taj, Slater and Julian Wilson won. They all did enough to win but compare their scores with the others in their heats. Jadson Andre in Parko's was throwing fins out turns for no return, yet Travis Logie was getting better scores for rides that I could have pulled off.
The judging just seems to get more confusing every event. One day airs are scored high, next its floaters, then its reos, then airs again, no wonder the ASP struggles to reach their dream of "mainstream audience" appeal. If someone who has surfed for 25+ years and watched competitive surfing for as long can't get close to working out the score then how do they expect a footy fan from Northam to understand it ?
It seems that there might be a lay day tonight but if not and you're up around 11.00 pm onwards then FuelTV is broadcasting plus a good webcast and iPad apps.

Hurley Pro starts now
The Hurley Pro at Trestles is just starting with the trials final. After that it is straight into round one.
The conditions look nice but the swell is small. Jordy is still out and Dane Reynolds isn't coming.
This is the first event since the mid season cut. Bobby Martinez and CJ Hopgood are gone and three rookies are in. WA's Yadin Nicol is meant to be one of the but had given his spot to John Florence due to a Artois injury. He had worked so hard to make the tour it must be very disappointing.
Webcast and decent iPad app are available. Hopefully the webcast is better than Quiksilver's attempt in New York

Slater wins
Kelly Slater has won the Hurley Pro again beating Bede Durbridge and adding $100 000 loose change to his wallet.
The win puts him into first place and drops Jordy to second. Taj got fifth after lacking a decent backup against Dane Reynolds.
The next event starts in France in six days and is followed up by the Portugal and the Search.

Finishing today in the USA
Tonight will finish off the Hurley Pro at Trestles. Last night round three and the new non-elimination three man round four. Winners in round four go straight to the quarters with the rest into one of the four round five heats. This means that you can lose twice and still win, provided you lose in the right rounds. I don't like it but can see how the sponsors and spectators could see the benefit of the better surfers being in the water longer.
The waves were great. If J-Bay is the wave you surf in heaven, Trestles would be the back up for when you want to bust out a few different moves.
Probably the best exchange of the day was Jordy v Brett Simpson. Jordy pulled off a massive air rotation before a few hacks and finishing with a Superman. Brett followed on the next wave with two massive airs but was easily beaten.

Hurley Pro Starts
The first event under the new format, the Hurley Pro at Upper Trestles has started while we slept. I did watch the first two heats live on Fuel TV. The waves look typical, foggy, glassy and fun. It is definitely a wave you would love to surf but without the usual massive crowd.
The new format still has a non-elimination round one. Dane Reynold's looked like he really didn't want to be in his first heat but tried a bit harder to win his round two heat. Most of the names got through, including Taj Burrow but in round two Fredie P and Bobby Martinez have both been eliminated.
Surfline are calling a big swell from down near New Zealand to hit during the waiting period. But they were optimistic about Chopes !

Mick Wins Trestles
Mick Fanning has just won the Hurley Pro at Trestles, beating Dane Reynolds by a combo score.
Mick was on fire starting with a 6+ before dropping in two 8s when the waves returned late in the heat. Dane went big on every wave but just couldn't stick enough to win.
It was a big day with the contest running from Round 4 all the way to the final. The waves were pretty good but a bit inconsistent. Some heat suffered from long lulls with others full of waves.
Mick should head up the ratings with most of those around him falling early. Brazilian Adriano De'Souza has pushed into second and continues his stellar year. Slater made the semis so should move well into the top 10.

Round Three Done
Round three is done and the big casualty was Parko, beaten by Machado. Both surfed well but maybe Rob's hair flicks got him the extra one and a bit points to win.
Slater continues on his winning way beating Brett Simpson and scoring the highest heat score for the round. Slater is riding his little fat board and this trend is being followed by Dane Reynolds. Dane's board was 5'9" and wider than normal.
Parko's loss shouldn't make a lot of difference in the world title race. Unless he cracks in the next few events it will probably be one of his two throw aways. He is recovering from an ankle injury and looked a bit propy in his first heat so maybe this is part of the problem.
The annual Surfer Poll is on today (Tuesday night in US)so it will be interesting to see if this effects any of those still in the contest. Slater must be the favourite for another award. The women could throw up a roughie, possibly Coco Ho but if you had money it would have to go on Steph Gilmore.

Day 3 = Round 3
Day three is underway and so are the remaining round three heats.
Dane Reynolds and Ben Dunn are in the water now and both have thrown down a massive turn. Dane has chucked a two hand grab rail air reverse and Dunny smashed a reo so hard the finds were out and he was upside down.
Conditions are smaller but clean and really glassy. Makes you want to go surfing, especially with the local surfing conditions being so bad.
The first three heats are killer. No real surprises so far in this round, probably because they happened in round 2.

Terrible Two for Taj
Round one of the Hurley Pro is done as are the first two heats of round two. The bad news is that Taj has been eliminated after being beaten by two wildcards in a day. In round one he lost to US Open winner Brett Simpson and in round two, former number 2 and Hurley team rider Rob Machado. Taj will now have to keep a 17th for the rest of the year and with Parko through to round three has probably missed out again this year.
Watching the first and second last heats of the day (sleeping in between) the waves changed a little. Apparently the swell is from the wrong direction, throwing up more lefts than the usual rights and it was onshore. Early heats were very low scoring.
Mid days heats seem to have got the best waves. Not surprisingly Kelly Slater ripped it on his mini board. Somehow he was able to get 18+ when everyone else was struggling to get double figures. Watch his first turn on the heats on demand and you'll have to make an appropriate amazed noise.
The last few heats were at high tide slowing down the number of waves. However the waves were still okay. Prediction is for a smaller day today (tonight) and a little pulse from a better direction after that. But with a fairly short contest window there might be a lay day today but expect it to be a single.

Hurley Pro Starts Today
The next stop on the WCT Dream Tour is at Lower Trestles in the USA for the Hurley Pro. This is billed as the high performance leg of the tour, probably because it is usually a soft crumbly wave.
The advantage is that it evens the playing field a bit and gives a few more guys the chance to win. All the usuals are a chance with Taj, Mick and the Hopgoods needing a good result to keep up with Parko. Slater loves this place and can win with his eyes closed. Dane and Jordy do well here and Jordy has started to work out how to compete. Last year's run away WQS winner, Nathaniel Curran needs some results to avoid dropping off the tour and this may be his chance.
Just like their WQS event at Huntington, Hurley have increased the first prize to $100 000, making it the richest event on the tour.
Unlike the last few events this will revert to the old non-elimination round one format. This is probably good for the fans on the beach as they will have two chances to see Greg Emslie lose.

US Open of Surfing
The US Open of Surfing has been going for the last few days. It is probably the biggest WQS event as it includes men, womens, juniors, trials and longboards as well as BMX, skateboarding and a surfboard expo.
There is a WPS All Stars tow in expression session, which is scheduled for the middle of the night here. The surfers were selected by Hurley and voted by the public. The All Stars are -

The main event is down to the round of 16. With a mid-season break for the WCT more than a couple real pros have entered this event. Some because they were there for the all stars event and others because they may need to re-qualify via the 'QS. Nine 'CT surfers are still in the event with the rest being basically seven of the top 10 or so from the other tour. Five Aussies remain including Mick Fanning, who will go up against fellow Gold-Coaster Julian Wilson. Slater is against Nic Muscroft with Hurley legend Rob Machado facing Tahitian Michel Bourez. All these are heats worthy of a WCT event.
In the womens Steph Gilmore was knocked out in the quarters by a unknown Hawaiian. Despite there being an Australian in each quarter final, only Laura Enever made it to the semis where she will meet Gilmore's Hawaiian.
The live web-stream is showing highlights on a loop and will stream the event if your still up. Otherwise there are plenty of video highlights.

For the third time this year Parko has smashed his way into first in a WCT event. Parko started the final with a 9.47 and backed up with a 6.5. Damien Hobgood was chasing at least a high 8 from halfway through the heat and spent the 3 minutes in combo land.
Parko deserved to win and had been on all contest. He had two 10s and two of the ten highest heat scores. Only his semi-final was close
Yesterday was a classic day of contest surfing. The waves just got better and better and almost everyone was going off.
Slater was unbelievable in his round 2 heat against Nic Muscroft. He scored 18.84 out of 20 and had a throw away score of 9 ! If you only watch one heat on demand then make it this one. In round three he got a total of six and his 10th title might be on hold till next year despite there still being enough events.
Dane Reynolds just missed the final by a smidge but as a consolation won the hugely expensive Nixon watch for the highest heat total. One of his round two waves was so long he got dropped in on by a free surfer way down the line.
Not surprisingly Occy won round two of the Icons clash by less than a point. Just gives them an excuse to try again at Mundacca, a left.
The next event is the Hurley at Trestles in the US from 13th September.
Jennifer Smith from the US won the WLT title for the second time at the Roxy Jam in France. She beat Chelsea Williams in the semis in waves that looked fun but no more special that a pretty average beach break.
