Weather

Very dark over the horizon, Busselton and the Cape. On the radar Bunbury is in a bit of a clear hole for now but the wind suggests that we might get rained on soon.

The tide is really high, lapping at the dunes around Juniors and the wind from the NW. There is the some sideways wave action but it would be hard to catch and pretty shifty. If you're keen and quick you could probably pick up the odd one but it will be hard work.

Another one

A deep low should bash us over the next few hours. The warning is for widespread destructive winds and maybe hail. Lows move slower and pack more punch than fronts so tie down anything thats left from yesterday. The 100 kmh winds would be nearly double what we coped yesterday and last night.

Swell is meant to be between four and eight metres at Naturaliste. At the moment its 3.4 and rising. Locally its 1.10 at a very short 10 seconds.

No waves obviously and the beach is a mess. The Wall might be okay if the wind dies down a little but I would wait it out until at least lunch time. You don't want to be out there when it gets worse.

WEATHER SITUATION

A deep low is moving south of the state and is expected to effect the south of
the state during Tuesday. The low is expected to cause WIDESPREAD DAMAGING WINDS
to 100 kilometres per hour which could result in DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY in
the area near Cape Leeuwin, extending to southwest of a line Mandurah to
Katanning to Albany during the morning then to remaining parts during the
afternoon. 

HIGHER THAN NORMAL TIDES may result in flooding of low-lying coastal areas.
DANGEROUS surf conditions are likely which could cause SIGNIFICANT beach
erosion.

This system is expected to be windier than a typical winter front and is likely
to produce the kind of weather that is only seen once or twice a year.

Cape Leeuwin has recorded a gust of 91 km/hr at 5:43 AM WST.

Here it comes again

Another front on the way tomorrow with damaging winds. Good job I didn't put the outdoor furniture back after the last one.

Bit of a pre-front northerly wave for those who were quick this afternoon. I saw a guy take a clean head height drop on what looked like the best peak in front of the surf club.

The sea and swell have both swung north west and are climbing rapidly.  The sea is 1.12 and the swell 0.73. The swell period has dropped four seconds since midday and is sitting on 10.

There are some weird blobs on the Stormsurf wave models for the next week or so. It has a 30 foot swell hitting Marges in 72 hours with Perth getting 18 - 20. Forty seven feet of swell is passing the south coast. There are then two follow up 15 to 20 foot swells in the following few days

The models can be a bit funky and this is super unusual

WEATHER SITUATION
A cold front moving over the area during Tuesday is likely to cause WIDESPREAD
DAMAGING WINDS to 100 kilometres per hour that could result in DAMAGE TO HOMES
AND PROPERTY. In isolated areas DANGEROUS GUSTS in excess of 125 kilometres per
hour could cause SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE OR DESTRUCTION TO HOMES AND PROPERTY.
DAMAGING winds are likely to develop about the Capes early on Tuesday morning
and extend to remaining parts later in the morning. Thunderstorms are also
possible.

Higher than normal tides may result in flooding of low-lying coastal areas in
the Geographe Bay area, including Busselton and Dunsborough, on Tuesday morning.

This is typical weather for this time of year.

Lucky seven

The Naturaliste buoy has hit seven metres despite part of the site not working. The swell is pretty widespread with Rotto being over five metres and the same size was on the TV weather forecast for Perth where it never gets over 2.5 metres.

Both Bunbury buoys are out of action so no wind or wave readings are available but the port is closed due to the weather.

Don't plan for any improvement. The official forecast has winds in the west for the next three days at around thirty knots and the swell eventually easing to 3.5 metres for a time before cranking upwards again.

There really can be too much swell !

Novelty waves

Looking at the severe weather forecast for tomorrow some of my favourite Dunsborough novelty spots might be worth a look. Places like the old Dunsbrough boat ramp or the corner of Eagle Bay could be a goer if the proper spots are blown out. Otherwise Wednesday might be ok for the Farm and Rocky Point before another front on Thursday.

If you haven't already it might be a good idea to drag loose stuff inside and check the insurance policy as it could be a bit blowy first thing. The last time I can remember a front being due around 6 am was when the tornado rip apart the town in 1995.

Coastal waters forecast

Tuesday: W/NW winds 30/40 knots with squalls to 55 knots in showers and thunderstorms. Winds easing to W'ly 20/30 knots late morning and W/NW 20/25 knots during the evening. Higher than normal tides and dangerous surf conditions expected north of Cape Leeuwin. Seas 2.5m to 3.5m. Swell to 5.0m.

Blah

Pretty gross at the moment. The wind is pretty strong at the beach which is just a washing machine filled with choc milk.

Tomorrow doesn't look that good but there is a hint in the forecast of an early, light NE offshore Sunday morning.

Nothing

Nothing doing before I left for another trip up the Forrest Highway this arvo. The onshore was pretty strong in Perth so I doubt I missed much later.

Had a quick hand plane session yesterday arvo. It was very small and weak but at least it stopped the weekend being completely dry.

Ground hog week again weather wise. Nothing seems to have changed in three months.

Weather

Cyclone due tomorrow and severe thunderstorms just starting to move in as I type. The City of Bunbury surf club will be happy that they were able to get their country carnival done before the weather moved in.

The scary conditions haven't brought any swell yet. The buoy has been in or around the twenties but is just starting to move up again. There isn't away waves locally and it is a bit of a toss up whether we'll get any from the cyclone.

Perfect weather

Couldn't ask for better weather than today. Not because I'm surfed out from a week of swell and offshores (I'm not, the best I got was six inch Juniors late Friday) but because it is Bathurst.

I started watching Bathurst before I started surfing so it is always a bonus when the race and poor waves coincide. I don't need to make a choice between the two.

Go Skaife and Lowndes. If they can't win, any Holden will do.

What's happened ?

Been away for five days with work and returned to find a trace of northerly swell and light winds. It was too late for a decent look but made me wish I could have gotten home earlier just in case.

Looks like a low is going to give us some rain and wind tommorow and into Sunday. Swell might jump up to three around the Cape but if the wind direction is as predicted then surfing will be out for almost everywhere. Those spots that might have a wave will be packed with the weekend crew.

Interestingly, despite it feeling unusually dry, 0.2 mm more rain this year than to the same time last year. But that is still more than 100 mm short of the average. No wonder my water bill is so high.

Nice Spring Day

Fine and offshore all day. There was even a little swell but suitable banks are few and far between.

Still the weather made it OK for a paddle if that was your desire.

Meant to be a kick in the swell late Wednesday but the rain is meant to be back as well.

No News

Isn't always good news.

You might have noticed that there haven't been any posts about local conditions for a few days. That's because I'm over it. Finding it very hard to check out another poo brown, onshore day knowing that tomorrow will be the same.

Apparently there were a few waves at the Wall over the weekend and there was a tiny window on Sunday which enticed people out into sub-standard conditions but that is about it.

Rain and some sort of westerly forecast for the next seven days. What can you say ??????

Still Smashing

The wind and bad weather are still smashing in. The wind hasn't backed off for days but there has been a little sun today.

Swell is still huge. Naturaliste hasn't be under six metres for over 48 hours and the harbour is still well up over one.

However the onshore is making it unsurfable. Even down south the possible locations are limited to this side of the Cape. Sure to be crowded though.

Tie Everything Down

Last night's front was a beauty and the bad weather continues today with the passage of a low. A severe weather warning was just issued for the south west and it is about to bucket down.

As you would expect the beach is a now surf zone. Now where locally is worth even looking at. Stay home and watch TV.

Bad Weather Still With Us

Despite about 15 minutes of blue sky and sunshine first thing this morning more rain and wind is forecast over the next few days. Looks like you'll need to travel if you want any chance of a surf.

After dropping dramatically on Monday the swell came back up on Tuesday and has levelled out around 3 metres at Naturaliste. The swell has heaps of west and a touch of north so it is getting in on the eastern side of the Cape.

Apparently the Farm was good over the weekend and there were waves around to PK yesterday morning.

When will the weather end ?

More strong winds overnight and although lighter, the winds are still blustery and onshore.

No real waves around Bunbury with the swell having a lot of west in it. Between the showers you can see it pushing past Bunbury and hitting around the Binningup area. This means that very little swell is wrapping into the Wall but there is one guy out having a bash.

He did manage to get a couple, including a cover up or two but only his skill was keeping him from getting smashed on the rocks.

Two groms were playing in the shorebreak at the Bay. They seemed to be enjoying it but it didn't look like it was worth the effort.

Great Weather

The predicted strong fronts have arrived.

Swell is way up with the Naturaliste bouy hitting a touch over 5 1/2 metres around lunch time yesterday.

The harbour bouy got close to two but has come off a bit over night.

Still plenty of wind, mixed with big rain and a bit of hail are making it a good day to stay inside.

Eastern Coast is OK

There were some waves this morning on the Dunsborough side of Cape Naturaliste. The weather is a bit all over the shop but we are expecting a proper front this week.

Calmed Down

It finally calmed down and stopped raining about nine this morning.

The swell has dropped quickly but it is still a solid 5 metres on the Naturaliste buoy and about a metre in the harbour. That doesn't translate to waves as it is still slightly onshore and the ocean is a messy mud pit.

The mid range forecast looks okay from Saturday to next Monday with light offshores. There might even be the chance of an early on Friday. Hopefully when the currents settle there will be some banks.

Strap Yourself In !!!

If last night's weather wasn't enough for you, a stronger front is hitting as I write.

Winds are at 44 knots on the harbour buoy with a swell over 1.7 metres. Winds have been between 30 and 40 kph all day with gusts up around 70. A gust on the buoy was around 70 knots !!!

Naturaliste buoy is at 6 metres and the gales are continuing.

Tomorrow looks slightly better weather wise but not surf wise.
