ISD Part Two

It was still yesterday in the northern hemisphere when four of us braved the cold and headed south this morning. That means it was actually International Surfing Day still (somewhere).

It was ****ing freezing, starting at 2 degrees when we left Bunbury and not hitting double figures until mid-morning. There was plenty of swell but the wind needed to settle a bit, well that was our excuse to get a coffee at van at the bottom of Yallingup hill and procrastinate for a few minutes so the sun start its job.

We drank watching big Rabbit Hill and from the top look out could here Jay Davies board snap after his huge air. We saw him in the carpark a few minutes later and realised it was the second one he had broken already that session.

Smiths was our wave of choice and over the morning we weren't alone. The crowd was big but manageable with lot of girls ripping and some freaks.

There were basically four spots to surf, Supers, the reef and two banks on the beachies. The beachie was probably the pick but each had its moments. Plenty of wall, plenty of power and some clean pits.

When we came home BP looked like it had been ok as well. The onshore was in but light and there are some weird and shallow banks around. A few hours later the LAGO was looking very nice and there were a few getting amongst it.

Tomorrow looks ok as well, once it warms up !!!

Happy ISD

Too bad there weren't any decent waves.

Luckily the date is a little rubbery so I'm heading south tomorrow for a celebration splash. Not getting my hopes up though.

International Surfing Day coincides with the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, which means we get it in winter. Its a made up day that is being used to encourage surfers to be more environmentally aware.

If you love the beach and the waves and can spare some cash consider donating to Surfrider Foundation or SurfAid. If you don't have any money to spare then pick up three pieces of rubbish and chuck them in the bin next time you're at the beach.

International Surfing Day

Depending on whether you go with ISD being the Sunday around the 20th or on the 20th it is either ISD today or tomorrow. Technically ISD is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere which is the shortest for us and is Monday.

There is a few people getting wet but it is really shitty. The wind is onshore, tide super high and the water like mud. Maybe tomorrow will be the better day to go out.

With a building swell and light winds International Surfing Day threw up some good conditions but as usual waves were few and far between.

Sidewash seems to be the place over the last few weekends and drew a decent crowd again today.

Sunday is International Surfing Day

Sunday is International Surfing Day. The swell models have a big blob hitting the south but the winds aren't ideal. There are two things you must do on ISD -

• Catch at least one wave
• Pick up one piece of rubbish from the beach

Frack its Cold

2.5 at 1.30 am when I put the dogs out. 1.9 when I got up at 5.50 and 1.4 when I went to work at 6.30. No wonder there was ice on my windscreen.

However the day was clear and nice. As the sun came up there were two early birds out at the surfclub in waves that looked like Scotland or Alaska.

Locked in the office all day but there were still waves in the arvo. The back beach looked nice but a bit crowded and there were people at the closeout Clam and Hungry's.

Hoping for a belated International Surfing Day bash down south on Wednesday so decided to keep the wettie and new board dry.

International Surfing Day Today

The 20th June each year is International Surfing Day but it looks like there won't be much surfing in Bunbury.

ISD is an invention of Surfing magazine in the US along with the Surfrider Foundation. As well as surfing it is a day for doing beach related environmental projects.

Even though it is too rough to surf you can still get in the spirit by doing something "green" for the beach. Have a look at the waves and pick up three pieces of rubbish. Its amazing what that can do for the environment.
