Bells on

Bells is on with round two for the men in double overhead surf. Taj is through to round three after beating WA grom Jacob Wilcox.

The call at the moment is for the women's final around lunchtime Victorian time. Both Tyler Wright and Carissa Moore have been smashing it all event. Carissa had a 10 in her first heat and has been the stand out. The big swell will suit her but Tyler already has an event win. Should be good.

As usual it's on Fuel TV and online.

Nearly

It's been a nearly surf week. There has nearly been surfable waves all week but I still haven't got wet.

Today is no different. There is a little swell but no banks. It is inconsistent and the wind could swing at any time. I might have to check again before writing the day off surf-wise.

Prediction fails

The forecast swell never seemed to have arrived, mainly due to the southerly direction. It did hit over three metres at Naturaliste yesterday but the Cape is keeping it from us.

At the moment it is to small to surf and the tide is a bit low anyway.

My other predictions were for the Quikie Pro. They weren't much better. Josh Kerr went out early and Taj in the quarters. Both Mick and Parko are still kicking. The finals need to be run today as it is the end of the waiting period. Marges starts this weekend but the tour surfers don't need to be here for a few days.

Round Four

Taj, Fanning, Slater and Julian Wilson have all won their round four heats at the Quikie Pro and are straight through to the quarter finals.

The waves were short for Snapper Rocks but clean and rippable. The rumour is that there is a swell coming from a passing cyclone and the finals might be run in rifle speed tubes at Kirra.

Sidewinders

Strong southerly this afternoon pushed some little 45 degree wedges towards the beach. As usual with that angle the looked good but were both impossible to catch and with impossible wonks and sections in them.  However two bodyboard groms at Juniors were frothing and getting all the best waves.

Off the back beach two clubbies were having a ball catching runners on their surf skis. Would have been a bastard paddling into the wind but fun linking green waves back.

Wednesday and Thursday both look promising on the forecast. The southerlies might have even blown in a little bank or two.

Wednesday 13 March

Winds
East to southeasterly 15 to 25 knots.
Seas
1.5 to 2.5 metres, decreasing below 1.5 metres during the morning.
Swell
Southwesterly 2 to 3 metres, decreasing to 1.5 to 2 metres during the morning.

Thursday 14 March

Winds
East to southeasterly 15 to 25 knots.
Seas
1.5 metres, increasing to 1 to 2 metres during the morning.
Swell
Southwesterly 1.5 to 2 metres, increasing to 2 to 3 metres.
Weather
Scattered thunderstorms.

The harbour buoy is out of service again. Judging by the excuses for closing the path to the Bay the BPA will probably that they aren't preventing anyone from getting the swell reading they just need their own buoy.

Betting

Got asked today by a guy with some money to bet for his betting club who to put the cash on the win the Quikie Pro. My answer Taj (at $11) or Josh Kerr (at $26).

Taj is the defending champ and has won four times (in the Quikie and QS Breaka) at Snapper over the last couple of years. Surely he has to catch a break and win a world title soon.

Kerr is the total package and now has a wiser head. If the waves are at Kirra you can write off all the goofies and the power face surfers so Kerr will come into his own.

There's some pretty good odds, even the favourite Kelly Slater is paying $5.50. I think Fanning is a bit over rated at $7 and the third line of betting. Jordy Smith at $10 is strange. Its been a few years since he was on his game and he's never won here. Seabass Zeitz is $41 in his first world tour event above people like Michel Bourez, Bede Durbrige and both Hopgoods, all people with wins and years of experience on the world tour ?

I'm sure I have jinxed my picks but what can you do.

A missing superbank and brown water but still some high class surfing at the Quiksilver Pro. Round one of the men has been done and the women are all the way to the quarters.

Taj, Parko, Josh Kerr and Owen Wright all missed out in round one with Slater winning in the heat of the day. He was against Dane Reynolds and Kolohe Andino.

The event is on hold for a midday (local time) call today

Back

Back from my trip away. Nothing much to write about locally. There were some desperadoes out this afternoon in chunky but marginal surf. However good surfers can overcome poor conditions with three guys getting some decent moves in the slop. A few landed airs, big reos and odd 360.

Unfortunately for two blokes it was quite hard to get out and despite their best efforts they didn't make it. There was a lot of water moving around, strange tide and lots of rocks so there was no loss of pride from missing out.
