Big waves

Not here though ! I just got out from a twilight handboard in 6" wind chop. There is a rumour of a spike tomorrow but it looks short and really south. The winds don't look great either but it will be worth keeping an eye on.

Meanwhile in Portugal Garrett McNamara has caught some of the biggest waves anywhere ever. It was here that he claimed the world record and this looks much bigger.

Happy Australia Day

but it is flat and getting flatter.

Still it's hard to complain on a day like this and in such a lucky country.

Flat

Just the smallest of swell hitting today but nothing big enough to surf. The wind at the beach has a fair bit of north in it but on the weather station (which is in South Bunbury) it is showing as ESE. The forecast is a bit muddled so its hard to predict what will happen later.

Barnacles and belly boards

Not much in the way of surf today. However there was the odd period for micro-groms and desperadoes. The wind came in early from the south but was gusty and swung around a little.

I had a late morning belly board session at Barnacles. As usually it was dry sucking but I got a couple of fun rides. The water was crystal clear and warm and the sky blue.

A few had a frustrating session late this afternoon. There was a foot of swell but the direction was all wrong. It did look like you could get a wall or two but didn't pan out that way.

I've decided to get onto Twitter to check the shark sightings. Thought I may as well try tweeting local surf conditions as well.

Onshore

Did a run down south this morning in spite of yesterday's shark warnings.

The swell was that in between size that made it difficult to find the right place and the sea breeze came in by 7.30.

My mate and I tried a bank to the north of Supertubes because it was empty and looked ok from the carpark. It did have a little potential but was to inconsistent and the inside shallow, rocky and full of sea weed. We did catch a couple of mainly close outs and my mate got slammed shoulder first into hidden rock before the wind made it unsurfable.

The wind has set in but isn't sure if it wants to be a southerly or a south westerly. Either way there might be a wind wave locally this afternoon and I'm sure the kite boarders will be out there.

Friday's rock

I've said it before - there can't be a bad Friday afternoon surf. Today was no exception.

I deliberately ignored the beach first up this morning because I was pretty sure it would have been ok and I had to start work early. At lunch time I had to drive past and there was swell and offshore-ish winds. I wasn't betting on it still being ok when I finished work as the wind looked like it wanted to swing.

But by five-ish when I took the Kelvinator and the belly board to BP it was still offshore, the water was crystal clear and there was only a SUP and a couple of body boarders out. I started at Juniors but it wasn't really doing it so I paddled across to the reef.

The waves were good if very inconsistent. I caught a few wally lefts and nearly killed myself going for a floater on the end section which was dumping onto nearly bare rocks. Not only did the water disappear but my board turning into a slide, fins up ! Luckily no damage to me or more importantly the board.

After my fill I took my DIY belly board out for a couple of insiders at Juniors and it slid like a champ !

The water was clear, the temperature just right and the sun out. The perfect way to wash away a work week, especially when I have next week off.

Colour me surprised

More swell in the water than looked from the beach. Plenty of north but it was mixed with some west and a bit of onshore wind. The tide is surging a bit but the take off spots are pretty shallow.

The mix of directions made for some interesting wedges which hit different parts of the reef depending on how they eventually rolled through. I got a couple with shoulder height take offs that surged to the beach. Definitely worth the paddle, especially with a crowd of shoulder hoppers that were out of position for all the good ones.

It doesn't look pretty like Bianca or Iggy so you won't see any photos from me.

Cyclone Swell ?

Coastalwatch.com are talking up a northerly swell from TC Narelle for this afternoon but it does seem to be showing on the buoys. There is apparently a decent south swell as well and they are counteracting each other.

The Naturaliste buoy is 2.9 but coming down and the harbour buoy is 0.46 at 12 seconds with seas from the west at 0.55.

I'm taking the Kelvinator and the belly board to get wet anyway. Its 29 degrees and 74% humidity so any wave is just a bonus. I looked 20 minutes ago and there isn't much.

Storm cometh

Very dark down south with a fair bit of lightning. The wind would be pushing it our way so it might be  a wet start to the day.

No swell showing at BP.

Harness the wind

Nice strong sea breeze this afternoon. BP seems to have become the venue of choice for a small group of kite boarders and the odd windsurfer. No surprises there - have to be better than running up and down the Leschenault inlet.

Sticky

What a weird day. At 6.30am I was tossing up whether to go for a body surf, at 7.30 am I was walking to work in a swirling gale and just beating the rain. Lunch time was stinking hot, the walk home even worse. Then at about 6.00 pm I was paddling around under sleet grey skies in dribble.

The biggest surprise was that there was a crowd. There were no waves but there was a crowd !

I took my latest contraption for its maiden voyage. Made from a shelf from a wardrobe we threw out, ply and cedar. The waves were gutless but I got enough to be positive. The downside was that some of the glue didn't hold but nothing that can't be quickly fixed.

Grey

After some rain first up the day has stayed pretty grey. The wind is from the north and there is a nice bit of swell. The waves are a bit hit and miss but there is the odd one between the rocks, weed and closeouts.

It's worth keeping an eye out if you want to get wet.

Let down

Bit of a let down but there are some waves and plenty of swell. BP reef is the only real shape but its crowded with kooks. RULE NUMBER ONE - DON'T DROP IN.

The kook with the poo stance and the pump as the only move is very lucky that the body boarder sitting really deep and critical didn't punch him in the head for dropping in on every one of his waves. Poor bloke had to straighten out over the shallows and just missed getting speared in the head while this bloke sat in the safety of the shoulder and wouldn't have had a clue this guy was inside him.

The wind is a bit fluky but sort of offshore.

Swell in the water

The forecast has jumped to 5 to 6 metres tonight dropping slowly tomorrow. The Naturaliste buoy is 4.92 on one measure and over 6 on the graph. Bunbury harbour is 0.9 at 14 seconds.

Tomorrow morning is meant to be offshore. With this much swell it would be worth a trip south despite the holiday crowds as every where will be firing. Bunbury will depend on how much swell the banks and reef can hold.

Two for two

Got a fun session after work today. The wind wasn't to strong and the waves were hitting Juniors at a good angle. Size was around chest height on take off and there were some sucky sections linking together.

The forecast is for a big spike in swell tomorrow and Friday, possibly hitting five metres at Naturaliste. Winds will be onshore though. Saturday looks ok with the swell dropping to two to three metres and offshore winds. The temp will also be back in the 30s.

New Year

Started the new year with a pre-work grovel at Juniors. The north wester is already in and the swell is still small. I got a couple worth standing up on and you can never complain about a dawnie.
