Big names crash

Brazil hasn't been kind to the big names on the tour, except one Slater. Taj went in round three, Mick and Parko in four.

Slater has won his round four heat and is into the quarters. Only one Aussie has made it to the final rounds. Owen Wright is having his best event of his time as a full time CT surfer. Four Yanks have made it through including CJ, Taylor Knox and Dane Reynolds. Jordy Smith

The event will finish today and Taj is likely to drop down the ratings after his 17th. The waves are mainly lefts and seem to favour the goofy footers. But both Kelly and Jordy didn't seem to mind smashing backside.

Taj was ripped off

TB has just lost to Travis Logie in Brazil by less than a point. This hands him a 17th and puts a little dent in his world title run.

Taj was clearly underscored on both his scoring waves and Travis was massively overscored for his mistakes. The big difference between class and WQS re-qualifiers is they don't need to mess their surfing with double pump bottom turns or mis-timmed re-entries. Logie's highest scoring wave (a 7+) had both and he failed to show style, commitment, flow or power as required by the judging criteria.

Big Luke Egan did not hold back in his commentary and was quite clear from when scores dropped for their first waves that Taj was being hard done by.

Didn't Cheyne Horan get underscored whenever he challenged MR for a title ? Who's in the number two spot ? Slater going for 10 !!!!

One down, one still going

Steph Gilmore proved once again that no one on the WCT can beat her winning the Beachly Classic at Dee Why Point. That is win three from four events with her only loss (not counting stupid round one) was against a wildcard. The next womens event is in Peru in June.

After a couple of lay days the Billabong Pro Brazil is back on in ok surf. Brazil continues to be the one place that is always crappy and below the "Dream Tour" standard. Round three and possibly round four may go today.

Taj pulls the lowest qualifier Travis Logie, who surprised everyone by actually winning a man on man heat at WCT level. Don't want to jinx TB but he should win over the worst surfer on tour. There are a few names in the strange position of being in round three. Parko has a potentially difficult heat as do anyone against a Brazil nut. Bede vs Owen Wright and Freddie P vs Flores could be good as well.

Seems that with the lay days they have been able to improve the quality of the webcast and the site now has a new twist on "heats on demand" - you make your own playlist of individual waves.

Slater v Shippies

In case you haven't seen it - Slater shows that Shipsterns is easy if you're him !!! As hard as it tries it can't even drag him over the falls.

Round two and three

Brazil started late last night with the non-elimination round one. Not that it matters but other than Parko the top surfers lost. The Hopgoods both got through to round three in waves that suit their styles. Travis Logie lost again.

Round two is on now. The waves are ok, decent size but a bit all over the place. It looks like there will be some slow heats wave count wise. It is cold, grey and pouring with rain - no bikini babes at this time of the year.

Taj has just won his round two heat with a huge air and a combo score over a Brazilian wildcard. Even if Taj has lost both his top scores he still would have won easily with his two back ups. Mick is in the water now against a local and Slater is up next against another one.

The webcast is basic but Billabong seems to have sent their commentators. Luke Egan, Snips Parsons and GT are a huge step up over the people used at last year's event.

Cold start

Another way below average temp. this morning but it is warming up nicely. Still a little swell around but it has dropped since yesterday. BP reef seems to be the pick but it is a little hard to tell as the guys out can't surf !

The rip isn't as strong at Juniors so the waves aren't really breaking outside.

Another nice Autumn day

Clear sky, clear water, an offshore wind till about 2 and ................. some waves !!!

There were a few inconsistent waves caught off a rip bank straddling the rocks at the south end of Juniors. Left and rights but pretty short. The crowd was difficult not due to size but the complete lack of either skill or awareness of the rules. Some of you may remember my rant a while back about Dad's that come out with their son's but fail to teach them the rules because they don't know them.

If the lady on the red McCoy is reading this that message goes double for you. Don't use the extra length of your board to catch every wave or never venture towards the peak. When you catch one far away from the peak you still need to be surfing away from the breaking part (which for you was left today) and don't drop in. Then maybe you can teach the same thing to your children and their friends. Harsh but true.

Anyway, the lid riders were seemingly happy with the waves at the Bay this morning. It wasn't classically wedging but a few waves and coverups were had.

A few people on different craft ventured out at Barnacles, possibly tricked by the grinning barrel view from the Juniors bank. It was sucky and very tempting. However brand new fins and the first surf since my fin repair kept me away.

Looks like a similar day for tomorrow provided the swell sticks around.

Contest frenzy

The fourth womens CT event starts tomorrow. The Beachley Classic is usually held in crap suburban beach break waves but is the second stand alone event in the last two weeks. Carissa Moore won last week in New Zealand in ok but small surf after Steph Gilmore was knocked out by a wildcard early in the event. Its hard to get excited about these events because the waves really make it hard to show any decent surfing.

The men are in Brazil on Friday for the first Billabong event. Billabong have taken over after the local sponsor pulled out at the last moment. This event was moved to winter to try and get some decent waves. Last year it was crap and this year will probably be the same. And it will probably look cold and un-Brazil like on the beach as well. This was the worst webcast last year and it looks like it will be again as Billabong hasn't had the time get its team there.

On the plus side with the change in judging this year the event should be even more tailor made for Taj, Slater, Jordy and Dane.

Swell jump

Big jump in swell overnight with the harbour buoy over 0.8 and Naturaliste hitting 3 metres. It wasn't really huge in Bunbury but there was a lot of movement in the water. BP had some long closeouts stretching from the groyne to the reef. That bank is nice and shallow. Juniors was a closeout from the other end.

The swell has started to drop a little and the onshore makes it unsurfable.

Lets see what tomorrow brings.

Nice day

no surf.

But on the plus side it isn't summer flat, there is still a little movement in the water just not enough for waves.

There are predictions of a short lived jump in swell on Tuesday afternoon but with onshore winds.

Sunday

No surf to speak about. The swell is still around 0.3 but tide is really full and nothing is really breaking.

There were a few guys out at the Bay earlier catching some fun wedges really close to shore. No good for standups but they seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Nice morning

Surf is pretty flat though.

Got wet on my mal at BP but it wasn't any good. The banks look nice but the swell has dropped right off. Add in a tide that is filling up and it was inconsistent and fat. Did get one or two off the reef that were ok but would have been considered rubbish on any other day.

The body boarder who sat next to me told me that yesterday was superb. Typical.

Did you get out there ?

Looks like the last few days have left some banks at BP. There is the makings of a bank at the groyne with a bit of sand washed away.

One guy out first thing this morning, waist height plus waves and a light offshore. The tide was pretty high making some nice waves roll through to the shorie.

Looks like the winds have already started to swing to the west but the swell is still at that 0.3 range.

Bye bye swell

The swell dropped dramtically from over a metre at lunch time yesterday to 0.5 by midnight and just hitting 0.3 from most of today. The wind swung more westerly so the sea is still up but surf conditions have been poor.

It is hard to guess what the next few days will be like. Winds should be onshore tomorrow but may be fairly light. Saturday might have an offshore but how much swell will be about is anyones guess.

Change in the weather

The first real front of 2010 has arrive and brought a fair whack of northerly swell. This morning there were a few school holiday groms tackling BP as the swell started to build. One was way out of position between the southern rocks at Juniors and Barnacles. Hopefully he didn't get too smashed up.

The arvo was pretty huge. The waves were really solid and the wind sort of offshore. BP was wild and waves were feathering way out to sea before exploding on the shallow banks. Three guys tried their hand but after being tricked by an easy paddle out suddenly realised how meaty it was when the first set landed on their heads.

Fraggles had some waves coming through but no takers.

The Back Beach seemed to be the go for most and it was quite crowded. Standing on the beach reminded me of those Pipeline pictures you see in magazines. The waves were dumping close to shore and the beach dropped away from where I was standing so it seemed that some guys were actually going underground.

There were some big drops and some poundings, mainly on the paddle back out.

The light and conditions weren't great for photos so you'll have to excuse the quality. Add the fact that my best camera died at BP and my other isn't suited to shots from the beach.

Swell is up over 1 metre on the buoy but starting to ease. The forecast for tomorrow isn't great wind wise but maybe the Dunsborough side could be ok for an early season session. Apparently it was pretty wild this morning.

Flat

Just like summer it is flat again. The wind is from the north so we might actually get some of the forecast rain in the next couple of days.

Denied

Nice day. Offshore wind, crystal water but no real swell. There are a couple of lines but they aren't big enough to be surfable. If it wasn't a bit cold this morning it could be the middle of summer.

Access has been denied to the Bay for a few days while a ship is being loaded and unloaded. The gate is locked and I doubt it would be good enough to worry about the getting there the "old" way.

Four is the number

Fourth venue for the contest and fourth Bells win for Slater. Slater nailed Mick Fanning with a huge no hands spinning air in decent wave at Johanna.

Taj added a third to his Snapper win. So far this year he has two firsts, a second and a third. He looked to be a little underscored against Mick but as usual it is really hard to get a handle on what the judges were looking for.

The next event is in Brazil in a couple of weeks. Hopefully it won't be in the usual crap.

Perth waves are crap

Stuck in Perth for work. Headed to the beach this arvo to see if I could maybe get wet. Get better waves in Bunno with less people ! There was a 0.5 metre swell reading on the harbour buoy this morning so I'm hoping I didn't miss any waves.

Third venue for Bells

Round three and half of round four went down today in clean peaks at Winkipop.Taj was on fire again beating Matt Wilkinson by four points and smashing AI. His surfing is magic at the moment and he seems that ever turn is critical, powerful and fins out. Jordy Smith thrashed Owen Wright in waves that tended to run quickly down the line and favour natural footers. He then pull and air and a superman air on the same wave to earn a 9+ and beat Roy Powers.

Round two is done

Round two was completed today at 13th Beach in reasonable looking waves. Some rookies won their first WCT heats and head to round three. It was a bad day for the Hopgoods with both brothers eliminated by people they should have beaten. Bells was Damo's 100th WCT event, the seventh surfer to do so and CJ is still looking for his 200th WCT heat win. Travis Logie has recorded another 33rd.

Heat of round three will be Jordy v Owen Wright, especially if there are peaky and crumbly waves.

Sun's out

A little bit of sun seems to have encourage a few to pull on the wettie. The wind has dropped a little but the waves are still pretty bad.

Still bad waves are better than no waves.

Look out the window

The surf is exactly as you would expect. If you want to get wet you probably could but it wouldn't be any good. There were a few body boarders at the Bay getting some shore dumpers earlier.

If the wind doesn't drop off too much and with tide head down from a peak around noon, I'm making a very bold prediction that there just might (and I emphasise might) be a chance of a wave at Fraggles late this arvo.

Steph wins again

Steph Gilmore continues to be better than everyone else on the tour. She is starting to look like a female version of Slater, unbeatable by anyone but herself.

The waves were pretty crappy but some of round one of the mens was held. Taj, Parko and Mick all went straight through to round three.

The forecast isn't good. Not much swell and onshore winds. Might be Bells at Johanna again this year.

Women to finish soon

The womens event at Bells continues in difficult onshore conditions.

Steph Gilmore is through to another final and her opponent will be Chelsea Hedges or Sophia Mulanovich, who are in the water right now.
